  • The study of human behavior as it relates to the
    location decision making process.
  • Geography is destiny.
  • Place of birth is powerful determinant of
    lifetime experiences.

3
FIVE THEMES
  • Location
  • Place
  • Human/Environment Interaction
  • Movement
  • Regions

4
LOCATION (st. 1)
  • Where is it?
  • Absolute location longitude and latitude
  • Relative location in terms of other features of
    the environment
  • Use of maps as the tools of geographers

5
PLACE (st. 2)
  • What is there?
  • Physical and human characteristics of places.
  • Physical systems shaping the Earth
  • (atmosphere, hydrosphere, lithosphere
  • st. 3) this expands beyond social science to
    natural science

6
PLACE cont. (st. 2)

    development

7
HUMAN/ENVIRONMENT (link st.5)
  • Link - How is it connected?
  • Impact of physical and cultural processes on
    Earths environment
  • Environmental and conservation movements

8
MOVEMENT (link st.5)
  • Dynamic, not static
  • Movement in time and space
  • Migration of populations
  • Diffusion of innovation
  • Transportation and communication systems

9
REGIONS (st.6)
  • Where else is like there?
  • Combine similar places together to form a region
    i.e., bread basket
  • Regional issues and planning
  • Interaction of all other four themes with Region
    theme
  • Formal region

CONTENT STANDARDS
  • Colorado Model Content Standards for Geography
grew out of a series of efforts during the 1980s
and 1990s to sharpen the focus on just what
Geography is and just what Geographers do.
  • These include the Five Fundamental Themes of
Geography by the National Council for Geographic
Education and the Geography for Life of the
    Geography Education Standards Project.

11
CONTENT STANDARDS
  • Students know how to use and construct maps,
globes, and other geographic tools to locate and
derive information bout people, places, and
    environments.
  • Students know the physical and human
characteristics of places, and use this
knowledge to define and study regions and their
    patterns of change.

12
CONTENT STANDARDS
  • 3. Students understand how physical processes
shape Earths surface patterns and systems.
  • 4. Students understand how economic, political,
cultural, and social processes interact to shape
    patterns of human populations, interdependence,
    cooperation, and conflict.

13
CONTENT STANDARDS
  • 5. Students understand the effects of
interactions between human and physical systems
and the changes in meaning, use, distribution,
    and importance of resources.
  • 6. Students apply knowledge of people, places,
and environments to understand the past and
present and to plan for the future.
