(open floor) - (R7 and R4.8 meetings, industry developments)
- Determine recommendations - next steps ---
(interactive discussion) - (adjust interest areas, project scopes,

8Objectives
- To examine the emerging technologies for delivery
of commercial video content as part of data sent
to the home using internet protocols (IP) over
telecommunications infrastructures and the
associated home interfaces for use of the data in
a home network and - To determine if standards would be useful to
facilitate growth in that emerging part of the
consumer electronics industry, and if so, which
types of standards. - Harmony of emerging standards (including de
facto market based standards) related to the
technology will be considered.
9Possible Outcomes
- No standards projects recommended
- -or-
- One or more specific standards projects
- This is the final DG meeting
- (a DG can only hold 2 meetings)
10New Projects
- Threashold Criteria (Industry Support)
- Scope
- Contributors
- Chair
- Coordination groups
- A CEA standards committee (e.g. R7 or R4.8) must
approve any new projects - R7 also looks for extra due diligence
- (project resource needs, timeline,
post-development plans, etc.)
11CEA Standards Scope
- the design and manufacture of consumer
electronics (CE) products and related services - CE device/service and device/device
interoperability - transmission signals that may traverse the
demarcation points of telecommunications
infrastructures
12AGENDA
- 1100 Attendees join
- 1110 Overview of meeting logistics and conduct
- 1130 Rules for CEA Discovery Groups and expected
outcomes - 1145 Recap findings and recommendations from
first meeting - 1200 Review developments since the last meeting
- 1230 Reaffirm or adjust possible standards to be
developed - 100 (break)
- 130 Establish viability of new standards areas,
and timeframe for completion - 230 Determine final recommendations scopes of
any new projects and volunteers - 330 Adjourn
13Key Questions
- How would standards help this developing new
service? - Which areas are already covered well by
standards? - Which standards are needed?
- Who is willing to contribute to setting new
standards?
14Models
1 STB (gateway to STB) 2 Direct (gateway to
TV) 3 HN (gateway to LAN devices)
15Possible Standards
- Framework 12.5
- Remote diagnostics 11
- Service discovery and selection 10.5
- Interface to access network 9
- Testing regime 9
- Metadata 8
- Volunteers to participate
- Volunteer to chair
16Recommendations (from staff and committee
chairs, accepted by R4.8 and R7)
- R7 and R4.8 should request a follow up meeting of
the Discovery Group by conference call to explore
further the high interest areas from the first DG
meeting, and provide a definitive recommendation. - R7 and R4.8 should consider starting new
projects, pending the results of the second
discovery group meeting, particularly those where
CE product manufacturers can contribute
significantly and early to an integrated
ecosystem. - R7 and R4.8 should continue to coordinate their
decisions and determine which group will lead any
given project (but not undertake joint
standards). - CEA should establish formal and ongoing liaisons
with ATIS and DSL Forum (CEA staff and R7/4.8
chairs initially), and continue to monitor for
others.
17Follow Up Questions
- All areas
- Are there any recent developments that would
significantly change the areas identified in the
first meeting? - Are there a sequential relationships or
dependencies among the areas? - Can this area be recommended?
- Select areas
- What aspects of this area should be standardized?
- What assumptions about this area are necessary?
- What constraints need to be stated?
- What level of coordination with other standards
activities is needed? - What is the timeframe for completion?
- Is there a volunteer to chair?
- Are there volunteers to contribute?
18New Developments(open discussion)
- Program Guide info now available on 1394, so 1394
might become more popular as an in-home platform - This could affect the I/O on the interface access
device
19Polling - All Areas
20IPTV Interface Standards Discovery Group - Second
Meeting - Sept. 7, 2005 conferencecall / web
meeting

22Select Area 1Interface to the Access Network
- What aspects of this area should be standardized?
- Notes
- Area in flux depends on DLNA (ethernet) and
Cable MSOs (1394) - Focus on WAN first? Depends on framework?
Includes audio, video, data? - Depends on delivery model design for direct ?
- Includes
- Focus on higher layers
- The internet protocol stack that allows you to
bind an IP address to a leaf network - Physical connectors, bit rate, QoS (latency,
jitter, etc.), IP suite (RTP, STP, etc.) - Attachment, streaming, authentication/encryption
- Determine level of detail for quality and
delivery of content to the interface
23Select Area 1 (cont.)Interface to the Access
Network
- What level of coordination with other standards
activities is needed? - DSL, DLNA, ATIS, IP Sphere, cableLabs (DOCSIS
3.0) - Is there a volunteer to chair?
- Hitachi, Motorola (?), Intel (?), Cisco (?)
24Select Area 2Framework
- What aspects of this area should be standardized?
- Notes
- Same as interface?
- Fixed and mobile?
- Includes
- The in-home portion (coordinate with outside)
- Content flow to termal device
- Abstract framework, with specific instances (e.g.
interface, binding, etc.) - Populate with components, reasona and negotiate
among them (within the framework) - Scalability, variations for device types
- Is there a volunteer to chair?
- Intel, Microsoft (some position ?),
25Select Area 3 Service Selection and Metadata
- What aspects of this area should be standardized?
- Notes
- Closely coupled areas, should be combined
- Phases of enabled activity publish, browse,
resolve, stream, control - Includes
- Service selection and discovery
- How to use parts of the metadata
- Resolve metadata to URL
- Instantiate and stream
- Authenticatio, authorizations
- Metadata
- About content, devices, and other
- Ratings, user preferences, device capability,
etc. - Are there volunteers to contribute?
