A New Twist On The Coming Of Age Story
DOOGIE HOWSER is a brilliant young physician. 
Very brilliant... and very young.  Doogie
graduated from a prestigious university at the
age of ten and passed the medical board to become
a doctor by the age of fourteen.  By sixteen, he
was in residency at a large urban hospital. 
Because of his peculiar position, Doogie must
straddle two lives as a genius doctor in the
high-stakes world of medicine, and as an everyday
adolescent learning about girls, growing up, and
being cool. A comedy about the adventures of a
young man struggling through adolescence, DOOGIE
HOWSER, M.D. is also a real-world medical drama
set in a large urban hospital, where our teenage
hero is faced with decisions that can mean saving
or ending lives.  Doogies best friend and
colorful sidekick is the dim-witted VINNIE, a
girl-crazy teen who grounds him in normal,
adolescent life outside the hospital.  Keeping
Doogie's ego in check at home is his father DAVID
HOWSER, whos also a physician.  Doogies dad
functions as both a parent and as a mentor
because of their shared profession.  Doogies
mother KATHERINE is often exasperated by her
sons career as a genius doctor, but she also is
a kind, supportive mom.  And Doogies very first
girlfriend WANDA reminds him that young love can
be just as much of a mystery as any medical
diagnosis. Doogies brilliance at his age is
always creating problems at work.  Some patients
think a 16-year-old treating them is outrageous,
while for much of the staff that works alongside
Doogie, it's easy to forget the age of their
still-hormonal co-worker.  While his role in the
hospital may be fraught with problems because of
his age, Doogie has a bond with the younger
patients that older doctors could never have. 
And in between the highs and lows a doctor
experiences from case to case, the young Doogie
must also navigate the emotional world of being a
teenager.  At the end of each episode, Doogie
writes in his computer diary, reflecting on what
he's learned in the way only a growing kid
can. Doogies father often must remind him that
emotional maturity is a function of experience,
not intelligence.  This is Doogies conflict
hes a brilliant kid with the responsibilities of
an adult but the emotional life of a teenager. 
In this touchingly funny look at an extraordinary
teen who's just trying to live an ordinary life,
we witness the humor and drama of both the
life-and-death world of medicine and the coming
of age of a teenage boy.

An Alluring Cast Of Characters
Douglas Doogie Howser, 16 When Doogie was a
child, he had acute leukemia and almost died,
which is what made him want to be a doctor.  But
as opposed to other kids, the unusually gifted
Doogie realized his dream by the age of 14, when
he passed the medical board and went on to become
a resident physician at a large hospital.  Though
he looks and dresses like any other teen, Doogie
is able to brilliantly diagnose cases and save
lives in the operating room.  He lives with his
parents in a typically cluttered teenagers
bedroom but hes got a big poster of Albert
Einstein on his wall. Doogies life is spent
balancing the average concerns of a teenage boy,
like going to dances and obsessing over sex and
saving lives.  These two worlds are constantly in
conflict. Vinnie, 16 Doogies best friend is a
randy adolescent who's always scheming to win
girls and speaks eagerly and frankly about sex. 
Compared to Doogie, Vinnie is of below-average
intelligence, which is just the sort of grounding
influence Doogie needs.  Always seen climbing
through Doogies window to spend some time
hanging out, Vinnie is so obsessed with sex that
he feels "the laws of nature are conspiring
against me."  Case in point he consistently
vomits when he gets around girls. David Howser
(Doogies Dad), 45 Doogies physician father is
both a parent and a mentor, a man who is able to
impart wisdom to his son on not only about what
it means to be a doctor, but what it means to be
a man.  David is a mellow presence in the
household but is also assertive with Doogie about
being responsible hes firm with his son and can
go toe-to-toe with him, but the two have a close
bond and mutual respect. Katherine Howser
(Doogies Mom), 40 Doogies mother Katherine has
to deal with two doctors in her life, her husband
and son.  Formerly a rock n roll singer during
her bohemian past, Katherine had big dreams as a
young woman that had to be put on hold to be a
mother and housekeeper.  Though she lets David
parent Doogie more directly, she still is
actively engaged with her task of being a mom. 
Katherine works as a secretary. Wanda,
16 Doogies pretty girlfriend is a smart,
unpretentious teenager, confident in the way
girls can be during adolescence Wanda knows she
bewitches boys, and likes it.  She also genuinely
likes Doogie, though his intelligence and role as
a professional doctor intimidates her.
