Title: Finding Periodical Articles In the FCCJ Libraries

1
Finding Periodical ArticlesIn the FCCJ
Libraries
2
Periodical Articles
  • Periodicals are publications that come out at
    regular intervals.
  • They commonly include popular magazines (People
Weekly, Time, Rolling Stone), scholarly journals
(Journal of Education), or newspapers (Florida
    Times-Union, New York Times).

3
Print Periodicals
  • The FCCJ libraries subscribe to hundreds of print
    periodicals.
  • You can find the most recent issue on the
shelves, and back issues can be in either print,
    microfiche, or microfilm.
  • You can use LINCC Search to look up the title of
a periodical to see if an FCCJ library subscribes
    to it.

4
Periodical Indexes
  • To find articles on a subject, however, you must
    use an index.
  • An index allows you to look up your subject to
find what periodicals published articles on the
    subject.
  • Today, most indexes are available on the Web,
although print versions such as the Readers
Guide to Periodical Literature are still
    available.

5
Electronic Databases
  • The easiest way to find articles is by using an
    electronic database.
  • FCCJ has many online databases that offer
    full-text articles and advanced search
    capabilities.
  • Almost all of these databases are available
    off-campus through the Web.

6
LINCCWeb
  • LINCC, the Library Information Network for
Community Colleges, has created a Web site with a
login page that allows you to access a number of
    electronic databases.
  • The address of the Web site is
    https//www.linccweb.org/eresources.asp?lib_codef
    lcc0800

7
Logging in to LINCCWeb
  • To log in, simply type in your Social Security
Number with no spaces or dashes. The PIN is the
last four digits of your SSN.
  • If you are a currently registered student, and
cannot get into the databases, call any of the
    FCCJ libraries.

8
Electronic Resources Available
  • Once you log in, you can access the following
    databases and others
  • Academic Search Premier
  • Biography Resource Center
  • Business Source Elite
  • Custom Newspapers
  • FACTS on File News Services
  • Health and Wellness Resource Center
  • Literature Resource Center
  • Science Complete

9
EBSCOhost Academic Search Premier
  • One of the most powerful periodical databases
available is Academic Search Premier published by
    EBSCO.
  • It offers thousands of full-text articles on
    almost any subject imaginable.
  • All of the articles come from well-known
periodicals, and some include graphics as well as
    text.

10
Using Academic Search Premier
  • Once you log in to LINCCWeb, click on Academic
Search Premier in the General category.
  • Next, click the Connect to Database button.
  • This will connect you with the Academic Search
    Premier database.

11
Search Screen
  • The computer will bring up the search screen.
  • Options include limiting your search to Full
Text, to Scholarly (Peer Reviewed) Journals,
searching in a particular magazine, and limiting
    by date.

12
Keyword Searching
  • When you are searching for articles, you enter
    the keywords of your subject.
  • For instance, if you are looking for articles
about the effect of television violence on
children, your three main keywords would be
    television, violence, and children.

13
Boolean Searching
  • To search effectively, you can use Boolean
searching, which allows you to combine your
keywords to limit or expand your searches.
  • Boolean operators include and, or, and not.
  • Combining your terms with the word and will
limit your search to only those articles
containing all of your search terms.

14
Boolean And and Not
  • For example, the search
  • television and children and violence
  • will find only articles that discuss all
  • three topics.
  • Searching for
  • television and children not violence
  • will find articles that discuss television
  • and children but do not mention violence.

15
Boolean Or
  • Unlike and and not which limit your search
results, or broadens your search results.
  • It is usually used when there are two common
terms for the same topic, such as death penalty
    or capital punishment.
  • You can combine or with and
  • (death penalty or capital punishment) and Florida

16
Searching Academic Search Premier
  • Using Boolean terms, enter your keywords into the
    search field (Find)
  • and click the Search button.

17
Article List
  • The database will respond with a list of
    articles.

18
Article Record
  • For each record, the title of the article is a
link to a summary of the article. The title is
followed by the name of the periodical, the date,
    the volume, and page numbers.
  • If the entire text of the article is available,
it will say HTML Full Text or PDF Full Text.

19
Viewing Full Text
  • If the article is available full-text, you can
click on the Full Text link to bring up the
    text of the article.
  • If the full page image of the article is
available, you can click on the PDF Full Text
link to view the article in Adobe Acrobat viewer,
which is available free at http//www.adobe.com

20
Other Databases Available
  • Aside from Academic Search Premier, there are
many other online databases available through the
FCCJ Libraries Web page. Use the one most
appropriate to your subject. Others databases
    include
  • Research Library Interdisciplinary database and
    New York Times Historical
  • Grove Art Online and Grove Music Online
  • eLibrary Information from magazines,
newspapers, television and radio broadcasts, etc.
