Title: The Social Aspect of the Holocaust

The Social Aspect of the Holocaust

Your Initial Thoughts
  • We know that Hitler was in power during the
Holocaust but we dont know a whole lot about
him. We are hoping that this project will help us
better understand what he did and how he did it.
  • We know that the Jews were not the only people in
concentration camps and we hope to find who else
was there and why/how they got there.
  • We would like to know how the Germans were able
to distinguish the difference between Jews,
Polish people, gays , other Germans, and so on.
  • Our teacher told us about a scene in the movie
where the baby is taken away by nazis but there
is something going on in the background (
concerning the nazis social class) that is
    important.

  • "In the course of my life I have very often been
a prophet, and have usually been ridiculed for
it. During the time of my struggle for power it
was in the first instance only the Jewish race
that received my prophecies with laughter when I
said that I would one day take over the
leadership of the State, and with it that of the
whole nation, and that I would then among other
things settle the Jewish problem. Their laughter
was uproarious, but I think that for some time
now they have been laughing on the other side of
their face. Today I will once more be a prophet
if the international Jewish financiers in and
outside Europe should succeed in plunging the
nations once more into a world war, then the
result will not be the Bolshevizing of the earth,
and thus the victory of Jewry, but the
annihilation of the Jewish race in Europe!"
  • Adolf Hitler - January 30, 1939

  • Events leading to the Holocaust
  •
  • After World War 1, Germany was poor.
  • They lost many men of working age in battle.
  • They were left with a meager federal budget to
feed many who could not feed themselves or work.
  • These people were stereotyped as vagrants,
homosexuals, or the handicapped, because they
could not work or help populate the country.
  • Hitler ca
  • me to power through his plan to eliminate the
    worthless.

7
  • Religion as a Scapegoat
  • Hitler chose the Jews to be blamed for Germanys
    Failing economy.
  • The Jews (along with Jehovah Witnesses, Gypsies,
emigrants, And political enemies) were supposedly
    taking jobs from the Germans.
  • People either believed Hitler, or feared what
might happen to them if they didnt.

  • Placement in Concentration Camps
  •
  • Germans chose favorites among all of the groups
    that they targeted.
  • All groups were put into concentration camps but
the jews were targeted to be aliminated
  • Some prisoners were favored if they had
information that would give another reason for
even one more jew to be punished or killed.

10
  • (Continued)
  • In Mr. Gentrys story, all of the prisoners that
were spared were non-jews because the Nazis would
    not give up the Jews
  • In the movie The Devils arithmatic a jewish
woman with a baby was turned in by a Polish woman
who sought favor and possibly extra food or
    supplies.
