Lessons from the Classroom
  • Use Social Studies related Internet Projects to
    help students better appreciate cultural
    differences.
  • The Internet allows students to access the
original documents mentioned and discussed in
    their textbooks.
  • Student-to-Student activities to allow students
to teach each other, and also prepare them to
successfully operate in the information world.
  • Plan opportunities for students to share with
each other. For example, have time for students
to share what they have discovered and seek help
    if needed.
  • Because there are so many internet resources for
Social Studies classes, sort and find some of the
    best to get students started.

Using Internet Project
  • When first considering using Internet Projects,
it is sometimes easier to find another teachers
project to join than to create one yourself.
  • Some examples include
  • Books on Tape- Created by 2 teachers in RI, with
the goal to teach students about community
    service.
  • Geo Game- A contest where each participating
class fills out a geographical questionnaire
which is then sent to other classes who determine
    which city they are from.

Using Internet Inquiry
  • Internet Inquiry helps students develop
independent research skills and critical thinking
through the exploration of topics and questions
that are personally important to them.
  • Internet Inquiry consists of these five phases
  • Developing a question
  • Searching for information
  • Evaluating the information
  • Composing an answer
  • Sharing the answer
  • Click here for examples of Web Inquiry Projects

Student-to-Student Activities
  • The best way to learn something is to teach it to
    someone else.
  • Student-to-Student activities are useful for
    consolidating learning experiences during the
    final week of any unit.
  • The class can write a journal based on an
    internet project
  • Write imaginary letters as if the students were
    living in another time period

Using Individual Bookmark and Favorites Folders
  • You may face problems when an entire class does
Internet Inquiry with many individuals setting
    bookmarks or favorites.
  • One way to solve this problem is to have personal
folders in the Bookmarks or Favorites windows of
your browser for each student. When the students
find sites they want to bookmark, they can save
them to their own personal folders instead of
adding them to a long list of everyones
    favorites.
  • Note Make sure to inform students of where and
how to save pages to their own folders. You may
want to cover this in an Internet Workshop
    session.

New Literacies in Social Studies

on the Internet, Social Studies classrooms allow
us to teach students to evaluate information
    critically.
  • 5 questions students need to ask
  • Who created the site?
  • What is the purpose of the site?
  • When was the site created?
  • Where can I check the accuracy of this sites
    information?
  • How will the information at this site be shaped
by the stance of the sites creator and sponsors?
