Title: ioNodes, ioPortals, ioNetworks and CourseExchanges

1
ioNodes, ioPortals, ioNetworks and CourseExchanges
  • JOINED UP SERVICES OPEN DEVELOPMENT PARTNERSHIPS
  • Selwyn Lloyd - Phosphorix

2
About this update
  • Elevator trips for ioNode, CourseExchange,
    ioPortal and ioNetworkNode
  • Please during this presentation we would like you
    to consider
  • Open Development Partnerships
  • Shared services
  • Software Maturity, support services and virtual
    workshops
  • Video Demonstrations (ioNetworkNode and
    CourseExchange)?
  • Course Exchange update

3
Build an ioNetwork part demo
  • We plan workshops to introduce the process of
building and installing ioNetworks, we 1.5
developers working on making this an web based
facility with live broadcasts and recorded text
    discussions (chat)
  • Obviously time is limited today we wont be able
to watch any of the recordings in full, but these
will feature on the web channel
  • Here is an installation we recorded earlier...
  • This was a first cut and the the start of good
things to come (Thanks Dave and everyone back at
    the shed!!)
  • Since the video recorded there have been further
releases of our installer system the latest of
which includes live text support for the
    installer.

Progress of ioNetwork
  • 2002 SHELL project commissions the first
ioNetwork, many ioNodes deliver learner record
services in UK pilot based in South West
  • Hub spoke system agents, hub, transfer of record
of learning achievement in the context of
    lifelong learning
  • 2004 Phosphorix set up ioNetwork.ac.uk in trust
for UK Schools / FE / HE / AE
  • 2005 The Learning Matrix and EELLS projects carry
ioNode work forward for a further 2 years, less
emphasis on interoperability more emphasis on
Course Information Phosphiorix engage with XCRI
    project at its inception
  • Via Learning Matrix Phosphorix deliver bite sized
course exchange services system (ioNetwork hub
spoke again) for many Liverpool and Mersyside
    providers (FE and HE)

Continued Open Development
  • 2006 The City of Learning extend the ioNetwork
and focus on aggregating courses amongst the four
    Liverpool Universities. Reservations vis Open
Development model and open Data services model.
  • 2006 SOLVS and ioNW2 set up to extend ioPortal,
    ioNetworkNode and XCRI developments further,
extending XCRI with sector skills data is mapped
    out
  • 2007 MOVE Learner Services and MOVE XCRI project.
    Enhanced discovery tools to demonstrate
progression between courses and pathways into a
    career
  • 2007 Wider discussion with YHELLN and SWLLN vis
ioPortal, and RicX. Distint interest in open
development work achieved under JISC programme to
    be taken forward.
  • 2007 Phosphorix start RicX project to release as
exemplar use of ioNetworkNodes, demod alongside
    MOVE XCRI mini project

Course Agent installation

Progress and the EDGE
  • 2008 CourseExchange released with ioNetworkNode
via Phosphorix web site and at main JISC
    conference on OSS watch stand
  • 2008 Phosphorix release open source statement
  • Open development back in full swing, funds from
Phosphorix, GMSA, ioNW2, WCC, MOVE and YHELLN.
  • GMSA XCRI project commences to test
    CourseExchange and ioNetworkNode supported by
Phosphorix but not implemented by Phosphorix
  • WCC XCRI project commences with Phosphorix as
    support and development partners

10
Batch Publishing
11
The Phosphorix Open Source Statement
  • A statement was made to clarify our position as
partners on JISC projects or as developers for
    hire for release on web
  • We have evolved from offering a free to education
model to offering OSI Approved licenses and
    public releases
  • Where we hope to engage a community such as
developers in education, we grant an Apache2
    license (ioMorph, ioNetworkNode)?
  • Where we wish to control development we grant a
    GPL license
  • In all cases we grant a royalty free,
non-exclusive license to use develop or use the
    software

12
CourseExchange Demo
  • CourseExchange comes in three parts these are
    individual web applications
  • An ioNetworkNode may host one or more
CourseExchange web apps, but only one hub per
    network
  • The parts are CourseAgent(s), CourseHub and
    ioPortals
  • Today we are showing a generic CourseExchange
ioPortal however all our ioPortal projects have
the ability to connect to one or more ioNetworks
and the CourseHubs thereon (SOLVS, YHELLN, MOVE,
    PDP4XL2 and so on)

13
Using CourseExchange
14
Progress at the EDGE
  • Phosphorix set up access to and edge development
    server for CourseExchange and ioNetworkNode
projects with explicit interest in XCRI and edge
    developments
  • CourseExchange undergoes major refactor
  • Again an open development model
  • MOVE helps with cost of extensible course
    information fields
  • YHELLN helps with batch publishing module
  • Phosphorix self funds major rewrite after plea to
    community fails to raise interest
  • New release available on http//demo.phosphorix.ne
    t next Friday
  • Edge release available to partners via
    http//edge.phosphorix.net next Tuesday

15
Extensible core
16
Around the Phosphorix Web Site
  • A web and extranet facility based on ioPortal
  • Features individual product web sites and blogs
  • play recording...

17
Maturity and support
  • Five years ago we were asked... We like ioNode...
but what if your not around next year?
  • ioNetworkNode and ioMorph are released under
Apache 2, but maintained by Phosphorix this
allows us to hand over to the community if ever
we need to or indeed the community could take
    over
  • We are building services and responsibilities
which some call common sense and others analyse
    against open source maturity models
  • Forums, FAQs, Commercial Support services etc

18
Thank you
  • If there is time... any questions?
