1biography
2Lance Armstrongthe man
Was it always glorious?
3- His biological father left before his mother gave
birth at age 17 - One bedroom house Oak Cliff, Texas
- Stepfather abused him severely
- Found secret letters
- Stood up to his step father
- Diagnosed with testicular cancer
- Battled chemo therapy
- Won Tour De France 7 times setting all-time
record - Responsible for millions of dollars donated to
cancer through his and other programs
4Iron Kids Triathlon at 13 and became a
professional triathlete when he was just 16 years
old
- His grueling training schedule nearly cost him
his high school diploma, but private classes
during the final weeks of the school year enabled
Lance to graduate on time
5- Getting cancer was "...the best thing that ever
happened to me,"
6The truth is, if you asked me to choose between
winning the TdF and cancer, I would choose
cancer. Odd as it sounds, I would rather have the
title of cancer survivor than winner of the Tour,
because of what it has done for me as a human
being, a man, a husband, a son and a father.
-Lance Armstrong.
What is your greatest victory
7Check homework
- New homework
- Worksheet 10
8Pick a student to keep time
- You have an exam next class we will review the
last part of class
9We have shown how the electrons dwell in orbits
around the atom an S that holds 2 electronsan
P that holds 6 electrons
10The first orbital is small and has only a s
shellthe second orbital is larger and has both
a S shell and a P shell
11The lowest orbital fills first
The first shell is composed of only a S shell so
to be complete it needs only 2 electrons
12The lowest orbital fills first
The second shell is composed of a S and P shell
so to be complete it needs a total of 26 8
electrons
13Lithium atom
To be stable it can gain 7 electrons or lose one
electron
14Fluorine atom
15Oxygen
16We have described the atom itself from the work
of Rutherford with the gold foil
experimentCrooks with the crooks tube
17But what about this electron cloud
18Is this how it is?
19Why dont the electrons fall inside the nucleous?
- What keeps them at a distance
What gives substances color
What enables florescence the ability to collect
and hold light
The answer is in the wave
20Today we are going to study more accurately the
shape of the electronic cloud
The Bohr model
21The wave form is the reason behind the glow of
the Frisbee
- The wave form is the reason behind the color of
a flame
The wave form is the reason these pieces of metal
change color
22To understand why electrons dont fall into the
nucleus we need to understand basic physics of
wave motion
23Basically waves are accumulation of mass due to
applied energy
24Energy forces matter To clump leaving voids
Why are there Spaces between The clouds?
25The consistent and periodic ripples a boat makes
in water
26The stacking of anything in response to pressure
27Electrons are forced into specific waves around
the nucleus.
- These wave forms force the electrons into
specific orbits called - quantum orbitals
28Imagine if there were a million sliding beads on
a very long vibrating string.
Would they shift to any particular spots on the
vibrating string?
Nodalize !!!!!!!!!!!
29The way energy takes the form of waves is
critical to the understanding of the electron
cloud
30Wave motion forces matter into a particular
pattern
- Could this be what forces electrons into a
particular orbit around a nucleus?
31Glow in the dark
phosphors
32The first shell has an S
- The second shell has an S and P
- The third shell has an S and P
33How do I memorize this
- You dont have to
- Look at the periodic table
34Note the electron config number
35Draw the atom including charge on nucleus and
shell layers for
- Ca 1
- Pb o
- F -1
- Neo
- Cl-1
- Mg2
36Pair up and lets draw some orbits and count some
protons and electrons
37Do the electrons always fill all the shells
underneath?
- No you can force electrons to higher levels
- Ground state of electrons
- Excited state of electrons
38Lets go over the exam review
