History of Toyota Side Airbag System
  • In 1996, Toyota began offering torso side air
    bags in one Lexus model.
  • During this time, Toyota continued to improve its
side air bag systems with rigorous internal
    standards.
  • Toyota also continued developing side curtain air
    bags.

3
History of Toyota Side Airbag System
  • By the 2000 MY, Toyota began offering front side
torso air bags on almost all Lexus and Toyota
    models.
  • Also, in the 2001 MY, some Lexus and Toyota
models were offered with a torso and curtain
    shield air bag system.

Future of Toyota Side Air Bag System
  • By the 2001 MY, all Toyota and Lexus vehicles had
side torso air bags as either standard or
    optional equipment.
  • Toyota plans to offer curtain shield air bags on
    all models by 2005.

6
Toyota Assessment of SAB Systems
  • From the beginning of Toyotas SAB development,
systems were assessed by stringent internal
    standards.
  • These internal standards included assessment of
    OOP risk to children.
  • Since the OOP voluntary procedures were published
(August 2000), all Toyota systems are designed
    according to these procedures.

OOP Test Results of Mid-Sized Sedan
  • Mid-sized Sedan
  • Assessment using Voluntary OOP Test Procedures
  • Seat mounted torso bag
  • Curtain Shield air bag (front and rear)

11
OOP Test Results Head and Neck
  • In all positions, HIC values 1 of reference
    value.
  • All neck measures were also well within limits.

12
OOP Test Results Chest
  • Most challenging loading to the chest occurred
for the 3 yo Rear Facing Position.

13
OOP Test Results of Large Sedan
  • Large Sedan
  • Assessment using Voluntary OOP Test Procedures
  • Seat mounted torso bag
  • Curtain Shield air bag (front and rear)

14
OOP Test Results Large Sedan
  • In all positions, HIC values 10 of reference
    value.
  • All neck measures were also within limits.
  • Chest values were well below limits.

15
Upper and Lower Neck Considerations
  • For both the mid-sized and large sedans,
measurements for upper and lower neck criteria
    were within the research limits.
  • Highest neck loading was observed for the 3 yo
and 6 yo in Forward Facing on Booster Block
    Position.

16
Customer Information
  • Vehicles with side supplemental restraint systems
(SRS) have a label on the B-pillar door jam.
  • Label directs to owners manual.

17
Customer Information
Owners manual includes caution statements for
both side air bags and curtain shield air bags.
18
Toyota Systems Designed to Procedures
  • Toyota currently designs all new curtain shield
air bag side torso air bag systems to the
requirements of the OOP voluntary procedures.
  • SAB systems in almost all current Toyota vehicles
conform to the voluntary procedures requirements.
  • From January 2002 (2003 MY Corolla release), ALL
    models conform.
