4000 MT Press Extrusion Line
  • MACHINE TYPE
  • This press is for the extrusion of hard and
    soft aluminum alloys. It has a horizontal design,
    an oil-hydraulic operation, four columns, and
    tool-holding traverse slides.
  • This press is designed for use in three
    different extrusion processes
  • 1- Direct action with fixed pressing disk
  • 2 - Direct action with movable pressing disk
  • 3 - Indirect action
  • Converting from one of the above operating
    setups to another requires the assembly (and
    disassembly) of the relevant parts.
  • The machine consists of a baseframe, a fixed
    cylinder-holding traverse, a movable punch
    holding traverse, and a movable jar-holding one,
    a reaction plate, four stiffening columns, a
    die-holding traverse slide and of two shears.
  • In addition, the press has a platform
    (positioned on the cylinder-holding traverse and
    supported by columns), with an oil tank and the
    relative hydraulic equipment (with the exception
    of the main pumps). This completes the general
    description of the machine.

  • BASEFRAME
  • The baseframe consists of a welded steel
    structure, onto which are fitted the fixed
    cylinder-holding traverse and the reaction plate.
    They are connected to each other by the four
    columns.
  • The plane and continuous runners for the movable
    parts of the press, (that is for the movable
    punch-holding traverse and for the jar-holding
    one) are mounted on the baseframe.
  • At the end of the extrusion, when the punch
    moves backward, some counterstrokes may occur
    owing to the decrease of the oil pressure. A
    dampening system, consisting of two pre-loaded
    disk springs, has been assembled on the baseframe
    (and connected by a rod integral with the
    traverse) in order to prevent these impacts from
    being transmitted to the foundation, and to
    absorb them between the baseframe and the fixed
    cylinder-holding traverse.
  • The baseframe is shaped in such a way as to
    allow the vertical ejection of scrap (and
    intruded billets).

  • FIXED CYLINDER-HOLDING TRAVERSE
  • The fixed traverse has a welded steel structure.
    It rests on the baseframe (to which it is
    connected via the dampening system) and is fixed
    directly to the foundation by long tie-rods.
  • Fitted in the fixed traverse are the main
    cylinder, the two lateral cylinders for the
    forwarding and retracting motions of the
    punch-holding traverse, the two cylinders for the
    movement of the jar-holding traverse, the four
    stiffening columns, and the two fixed mechanical
    stop blocks, against which the punch-holding
    traverse stops at the end of its return travel.

  • CYLINDERS
  • The high quality, forged steel, main cylinder is
    inserted and centered in the fixed traverse. The
    cylinder contains some bronze bushings which
    guide the main piston, the end of which is
    connected to the movable punch-holding
    traverse. The single-acting piston is in forged
    steel, with a chromium plated outer surface.
  • Four oil-hydraulic, double-acting cylinders, of
    forged steel, are placed on the side of the main
    cylinder. The rods of two of them (the upper and
    lower one) are connected to the movable
    punch-holding traverse in such a way as to
    control the forward and the retracting motion of
    the main piston.
  • The rods of the other two cylinders are
    connected to the jar-holding traverse. In the
    direct phase, these two cylinders allow the jar
    assembly to maintain pressure against the
    die-holding slide. In the indirect phase,
    pushing the jar-holder helps the main piston (and
    the two lateral ones) increase the power of the
    machine during maximum thrust conditions.

  • STIFFENING COLUMNS
  • Four forged steel columns rigidly connect the
    fixed cylinder-holding traverse, to the reaction
    plate. Special threaded nuts put the columns
    under pre-tension, and clamp them permanently
    during the final assembly of the press.

  • MOVABLE PLUNGER-HOLDING TRAVERSE
  • The movable punch-holding traverse, which
    consists of a welded structure with a forged
    central insert, is operated by the main piston
    and by two double-acting lateral cylinders.
  • The runners of the punch-holding traverse slide
    and two clamping hydraulic cylinders are fixed on
    the traverse. The two cylinders are used only in
    the indirect phase. They operate the
    guillotines which shut down on the rods of the
    two lateral cylinders of the jar-holding
    traverse, making it integral with the
    punch-holding traverse.
  • The traverse, which rests on wear sliding
    blocks, slides on the gibs of the runners
    attached to the baseframe. The location and the
    shape of these runners allow only the axial
    sliding of the punch-holding traverse, avoiding
    any other lateral or shifting movement. For this
    reason, two lateral brackets, fixed to the
    traverse, have been included.
  • The exact positioning of the traverse,
    transversally and vertically (and the recovery of
    possible backlashes occurring during the
    operation) is achieved via adjustment screws,
    which act on the wear sliding blocks.

  • MOVABLE JAR-HOLDING TRAVERSE
  • The jar-holding traverse consists of a welded
    steel structure, and is operated by two
    double-acting lateral cylinders fitted in the
    fixed cylinder-holding traverse. The movable
    jar-holding traverse, which rests on wear sliding
    blocks, slides on the gibs of the runners
    attached to the baseframe.
  • The location of these runners (and the
    adjustments on the traverse) are equal to the
    ones of the movable punch-holding traverse
    described in the previously.
  • A seat for the application of the secondary
    shear (necessary for the separation of the
    extruded part from the bottom in the indirect
    extrusion process) is located on the jar-holding
    traverse.
  • The jar is centered in the jar-holder with four
    keys located according to the center line axis of
    the machine (the two horizontal keys as a
    support, the two vertical ones as a guiding and
    centering device, which have the possibility of
    being shimmed). It is clamped by two jaws
    assembled on the jar-holder, and operated
    manually.
  • A bushing, with particular mechanical and
    technological characteristics suitable to bear
    the specific pressure and to reduce the wear
    phenomenons which occur during the extrusion
    process, is assembled in the jar.

  • REACTION PLATE
  • The reaction plate consists of a welded steel
    structure with a central forged insert. The
    latter has a central hole which allows the
    ejection of the extruded part.
  • The upper and lower runners of the die-holding
    traverse slide and the structure of the main
    shear are fixed on the reaction plate (which
    contains the four stiffening columns). The
    reaction plate rests on the baseframe and is free
    to slide on it in relation to the elongation of
    the columns under stress. The movement takes
    place along some runners arranged with a system
    of gibs placed under the reaction plate. This
    device allows the vertical and transversal
    adjustment of the group.
  • All the force developed by the press during the
    extrusion process is borne by the reaction plate.

  • DIE-HOLDING SLIDE
  • The slide is of forged steel and slides, resting
    on gibs, within two runners, a lower and an upper
    one fixed to the reaction plate. Its motion is
    obtained by means of an oil-hydraulic
    double-acting and double rod cylinder
    incorporated in the slide itself. the ends of
    the rods are held by two supports also fixed to
    the reaction plate.
  • A support which sustains two stud-bolts for the
    adjustment of the height of the slide, is keyed
    and bolted on the reaction plate. In addition to
    this device, two sets of balancing cylinders are
    located between the slides and the runners these
    cylinders, with their intervention after each
    movement of the slide itself, recover the
    possible backlashes caused by the wear of the
    gibs, and allow the correct alignment of the die
    with the work axis. This slide is suitable to
    contain the tools used both in the direct
    operation, and in the indirect one.
  • In case of direct extrusion with fixed disk,
    only one die is assembled on the slide. In case
    of extrusion with movable disk, one die and one
    group for the change of the pressing disk are
    assembled on the slide. In case of indirect
    extrusion, a die-holding punch and a scraping
    punch are located on the slide, instead of the
    die.

  • MAIN SHEAR
  • The main shear is assembled on the reaction
    plate. It consists of a welded steel frame
    containing a hydraulically operated double-acting
    cylinder.
  • The cylinder operates a cutter block group,
    which moves vertically on wearing gibs assembled
    on the shear structure. The two blades, fixed to
    the cutter block by screws, are made of a special
    steel.
  • The shear is used in two extrusion phases,
    direct and indirect, in different ways. In the
    direct operation, it separates the rejection
    bottom from the pressing disk, and the extruded
    part from the die. In the indirect action (with
    a proper modification in the assembly of the
    cutter block) it acts as a spacer between the jar
    and the die-holding slide.

  • SECONDARY SHEAR
  • The secondary shear is assembled on the
    jar-holding traverse and consists of a welded
    steel frame containing a hydraulically operated
    double-acting cylinder.
  • The cylinder operates a cutter block, which
    moves vertically on wearing gibs assembled on the
    shear structure. The blade, fixed to the cutter
    block by screws, is made of special steel.
  • The shear separates the rejection bottom from
    the pressing disk and the extruded part from the
    die.
