Title: Ephesians 6

1
Ephesians 6
  • The frog in the kettle with the gradually rising
temperature did not know how to react until it
was too late. Unfortunately, this sadly
    illustrates many families

2
Responsibilities of Children to Parents Ephesians
61-3
  • 1 Children,
  • obey your parents in the Lord,
  • for this is right.
  • 2 Honor your father and mother
  • (which is the first commandment with a
    promise),
  • 3 that it may be well with you,
  • and that you may live long on the earth.

Disobedience was a sign of Gentile corruption in
Rom 130 They are backstabbers, haters of God,
insolent, proud, and boastful. They are forever
inventing new ways of sinning and are disobedient
to their parents. And a sign of the end times in
2 Tim 32 For people will love only themselves
and their money. They will be boastful and proud,
scoffing at God, disobedient to their parents,
and ungrateful.
Modern version Parents, obey your children, for
this will keep them happy and bring peace to the
home.

  • Every baby starts life as a little savage. He is
completely selfish and selfcentered. He wants
what he wants when he wants it his bottle, his
mothers attention, his playmates toys, his
uncles watch, or whatever. Deny him these and he
seethes with rage and aggressiveness which would
be murderous were he not so helpless. Hes dirty,
he has no morals, no knowledge, no developed
skills. This means that all children, not just
certain children but all children, are born
delinquent. If permitted to continue in their
selfcentered world of infancy, given free reign
to their impulsive actions to satisfy each want,
every child would grow up a criminal, a thief, a
    killer, a rapist.

Ephesians 64
  • And, fathers,
  • do not provoke your children to anger
  • but bring them up in the discipline
  • and instruction of the Lord.

In the Roman law of patria potestas a father had
virtual life and death power not only over his
slaves but over his entire household
5
How to Provoke to Anger
  • Overly protective, restricting activities, never
trusting them, and over controlling them
  • Favoritism (Esau/Jacob), comparing
    siblings-looser is resentful and bitter
  • Pushing achievement beyond reasonable
    bounds-learns acceptance/significance depends on
    performance
  • Constant discouragement, questioning their
judgment, never good enough, never complimented
  • Failing to sacrifice for the children- made to
feel like an intrusion ruining the parents
    plans-attitude reverses later!
  • Expecting adult behavior from child
  • Using love as a tool of reward or
    punishment-manipulation
  • Physical and verbal abuse-most punish out of
anger or hurt child emotionally by sarcasm,
    rejection or threats

A Fathers Confession
  • My familys all grown and the kids are all gone.
But if I had to do it all over again, this is
what I would do. I would love my wife more in
front of my children. I would laugh with my
children moreat our mistakes and our joys. I
would listen more, even to the littlest child. I
would be more honest about my own weaknesses,
never pretending perfection. I would pray
differently for my family instead of focusing on
them, Id focus on me. I would do more things
together with my children. I would encourage them
more and bestow more praise. I would pay more
attention to little things, like deeds and words
of thoughtfulness. And then, finally, if I had to
do it all over again, I would share God more
intimately with my family every ordinary thing
that happened in every ordinary day I would use
    to direct them to God.

Secular Remedies for Family
  • Harvard University sociologists Sheldon and
Eleanor Glueck developed a test (that proved to
be 90 percent accurate) to determine whether or
not five and sixyearolds would become
delinquent. They discovered that the four primary
factors necessary to prevent delinquency are
  • The fathers firm, fair, and consistent
    discipline
  • The mothers supervision and companionship during
    the day
  • The parents demonstrated affection for each
    other and for the children
  • The familys spending time together in activities
    where all participated (Unraveling Juvenile
    Delinquency Cambridge, Mass. Harvard Univ.
    Press, 1950, ?pp.? 25771).

Seven Attitudes of Servants Spirit-Filled Labor
relationsEphesians 65-6
Struggle today between employer and employees is
greed and selfishness.
Gods plan is authority and submission relations
in mutual submission
  • 5 Slaves,
  • be obedient to those
  • who are your masters
  • according to the flesh,
  • with fear and trembling,
  • in the sincerity of your heart,
  • as to Christ
  • 6 not by way of eyeservice,
  • as men-pleasers,
  • but as slaves of Christ,
  • doing the will of God from the heart.

9
Submission of Employees Eph 67-8
  • 7 With good will render service,
  • as to the Lord,
  • and not to men,
  • 8 knowing that whatever good thing
  • each one does,
  • this he will receive back
  • from the Lord,
  • whether slave or free.

10
Submission of Employers Eph 69
  • 9 And, masters,
  • do the same things to them,
  • and give up threatening,
  • knowing that both their Master
  • and yours is in heaven,
  • and there is no partiality with Him.

11
Challenge to Warfare Ephesians 610-11
  • Finally,
  • be strong in the Lord,
  • and in the strength of His might.
  • 11 Put on the full armor of God,
  • that you may be able to stand firm
  • against the schemes of the devil.

Timothy became fearful and timid. Paul wrote,
God has not given us a spirit of timidity, but
of POWER and love and discipline. Therefore do
not be ashamed of the testimony of our LordYou,
therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is
in Christ Jesus (2 Tim 16-8, 21)
On Macro scalePower to seduce and Persuade
Deceived Israel in desert after miraculous
exodus, led Israel to worship hideous idols of
paganism, convinced Israel to crucify their
Messiah, and will persuade all that Antichrist is
really Christ Today demonic persuasion is
changing family values, new morality, pagan and
apostate cults, many seducing spirits and
doctrines of demons (1Tim 41)
  • Why would people ignore, be indifferent or forget
    the armor?
  • No sense of danger or respect for the power of
    the enemy
  • Do not have all the weapons
  • Untrained in use of weapons
  • Too comfortable thus are willing to be ignorant
    of the battle

12
The Spiritual Mafia Hierarchy Eph 612-13
  • 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and
    blood,
  • but against the rulers,
  • against the powers,
  • against the world forces
  • of this darkness,
  • against the spiritual forces
  • of wickedness
  • in the heavenly places.

There is no formula nor method for
exorcismsChristians have authority and power to
overcome Satan. James gives only instruction to
resist Satan and he will flee (Jas 47). Where
sin is confessed and repented, Satan is defeated.
13
Empowerment for Victory Eph 613
  • 13 Therefore,
  • take up the full armor of God,
  • that you may be able to resist in the evil day,
  • and having done everything,
  • to stand firm.

14
Satans Schemes
  • Discredits Gods character, credibility and
abilitytempting men to distrust God, disregard
the Scripture, doubt Gods purpose and blame God
    for evil
  • Generates trouble that makes life difficult,
tempting you to abandon Gods standard and
purpose for your life, esp. by persecution, fear
    of criticism
  • Doctrinal confusion and falsehood to dissuade the
    untaught and emotional
  • Opposition to ministry (many adversaries 1 Cor
    169)
  • Attacks believers by causing divisions. Jesus
paid for their unity (Jn 174, 21-23). Carnal
Corinthians fell prey to his schemes (1 Cor 1-3)
  • Persuades you to trust your own resources. Satan
got David to count his troops (1 Chron 211-8).
Like trusting your degree, personality, talent,
knowledge, funds instead of His providence.
  • Leads believers into hypocrisyfaking it, with a
    disobedient secret life
  • Convinces believers of worldliness, materialism,
    self-satisfaction, self-indulgence, hedonism,
quest for more things and worldly respect.
  • Leads believers to disobey Gods Word. God wants
us to be moral, Satan, immoral God wants us to
speak truth Satan to lie God wants us to be
    unselfish loving, Satan, selfish disinterested
God wants us content, Satan, greedy, covetous,
envious God wants us to live by faith, Satan, to
    live by sight, etc.

15
Believers 7-Part Armor Eph 614-15
  • 14 Stand firm therefore,
  • having girded your loins with truth,
  • and having put on the breastplate of
    righteousness,
  • 15 and having shod your feet
  • with the preparation of the gospel of peace
  • Righteousness is to wrap around our lives (not
self-righteousness thinking we are holy), but a
    transparent genuineness and commitment to
obedience, not to give the devil an opportunity
    (Eph 424-27).
  • Most emotional and relational problems caused by
    selfish
  • Results in fruitlessness and loss of rewards (1
    Cor 312-15)
  • Brings reproach on Gods glory by failing to
adorn the doctrine of God (Tit 210). I urge
youto abstain from fleshly lusts which war
against the soul (1 Pet 211)

We are human, but we don't wage war with human
plans and methods. 4 We use God's mighty weapons,
not mere worldly weapons, to knock down the
Devil's strongholds. 5 With these weapons we
break down every proud argument that keeps people
from knowing God. With these weapons we conquer
their rebellious ideas, and we teach them to obey
Christ. 2 Corinthians 103-5
16
Armor of Believer Eph 616-17
  • 16 in addition to all,
  • taking up the shield of faith
  • with which you will be able to extinguish
  • all the flaming missiles of the evil one.
  • 17 And take the helmet of salvation,
  • and the sword of the Spirit,
  • which is the word of God.

17
Power Source of Prayer Ephesians 618
  • With all prayer
  • and petition
  • pray at all times in the Spirit,
  • and with this in view,
  • be on the alert with all perseverance
  • and petition for all the saints,

18
How to pray for a Servant Eph 619-20
  • 19 and pray on my behalf,
  • that utterance may be given to me
  • in the opening of my mouth,
  • to make known with boldness
  • the mystery of the gospel,
  • 20 for which I am an ambassador in chains
  • that in proclaiming it I may speak boldly,
  • as I ought to speak.

My circumstances have turned out for the greater
progress of the gospel, so that my imprisonment
in the cause of Christ has become well known
throughout the whole praetorian guard and to
everyone else, and that most of the brethrenhave
far more courage to speak the word of God without
fear Phil 112-14
19
Intelligent prayers require information Ephesians
621-22
  • But that you also may know about my
    circumstances,
  • how I am doing,
  • Tychicus, the beloved brother
  • and faithful minister in the Lord,
  • will make everything known to you.
  • 22 And I have sent him to you
  • for this very purpose,
  • so that you may know about us,
  • and that he may comfort your hearts.

20
The Benediction Eph 623-24
  • 23 Peace be to the brethren,
  • and love with faith,
  • from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
  • 24 Grace be with all
  • those who love our Lord Jesus Christ
  • with a love incorruptible.
