1IDRISI to ArcMAP and Back
- Moving data from IDRISI
- To
- ArcMAP/Spatial Analyst
2Overview
Export IDRISI Vector or Image files to
intermediate files

are NOTvector files in the pick list???
6Step 2 Setting up ArcGIS
- Launch ArcMap (9.x only wont work in 8.x!)
- Select the Spatial Analyst Extension
- View Menu

- If Spatial Analyst is not in the list you may
have to load it by going to the Tools
menu/Extensions/ and checking Spatial Analyst
7Step 2 Import
- If the toolbox is not open click ?
- Double click ASCII to Raster tool

- Green or red text is bad news
12Grid is added
- This is the result
- Note that the attribute values for asciito_water1
were carried over. - BUT if there is a text legend for the layer the
attribute values will not be carried over as is
shown in the next slide
13Import of Roads with text Legend
- This is the grid that opened when I exported the
roads image that had text as legend values - Note that all roads have the same attribute value
14- When this opened the Table of Contents (left of
the image) legend had a color value for 0 and you
could not see the elevation image below it. - I Right Clicked the color box (patch) for zero
(0), background value, and clicked No Color as
shown next. - When, in IDIRSI, I copied the roads file with out
a background and deleted all legend entries (road
names) and exported that to ArcMAP this was the
result
15Changing Pallet manually
- This dialog gives you a wide range of colors to
chose from - Including No Color
16More advanced symbology
- Right click on the name of the grid (Im doing it
for the roads grid that has numeric attributes - Select Properties

21- Drawing boxes
- Select with drawing cursor
- Double click the change colors and line widths
- Neatline that encloses the data can be removed as
above and selecting a line color of none
22Insert objects into Layout
23Insert Legend
- Click Insert/legend
- You will go through a series of Wizards to
construct the legend - First you select the layers you want legend info
for in the Legend - Here I want only water and roads
24Legend Frame
- The other Wizard that tricky is the one for
borders, fill, and drop shadow - GAP is very important since that specifies the
distance between elements of the legend and the
surrounding border - 10 is a good choice
25Edit Legend
- Legend produced by the legend wizard
- Select legend with drawing tool
- You need to ungroup the legend elements in order
to edit them. - This is the legend that ArcGIS constructed after
I removed the zero items in the layers Symbology
tab - I have to
- Provide a subtitle for Roads and Water
- Have only 1 legend item for water
26Editing setup
- Right click on the legend
- The menu to the right pops up
- Click Convert to Graphics (Grayed out here but
it wont be when you do it! - Rt click on legend again and click Ungroup
27- Green handles appear on all the elements of the
legend - You have to be careful here because it is easy to
mess up the legend - I needed a bit more space (length) of the Legend
box and fill - Clicked elsewhere and then on the surrounding box
- Select the box and drag the bottom of the box
down abut 2 of the patches - Do the same for the fill
28More
- This is what the legend looked like after I
- Deleted on of the water patches
- Ungrouped (right click) the remaining water
patch, selected the text, and dragged up - Selected all the road patches and their text and
dragged them down so I had space for a
Transportation lable
29- This is the legend after I
- Centered the word Legend using the arrow keys
(click to select) - From the graphics tool bar (bottom of layout
window) selected the text tool and inserted
Transportation Set the size to 14 by right
clicking it and selecting text and then Change
symbol to change the text size - Centered it using the arrow keys
- Made the Water label the same size
- Select the entire legend by dragging a box around
it with the graphics tool, right clicking, and
clicking Group - Now I can move it around at will without screwing
it up. - If you forget to group it and then try to move it
you WILL screw it up, CTRL Z to the rescue if
you do that

This is what get
33Using Command Line

As soon as you type the first few letters of the
desired command a list pops up with the choices
This in the output file. You have to give the
entire path. It has to have an extension of .fil
If you have rasters in ArcMap as soon as you
space a popup of rasters will appear
34Grid in ArcMap
35And in Idrisi
How about them apples!

Browse for your .flt file
37MOVING GRIDS
- NEVER IN EXPLORER!
- You can move any folder which contains an INFO
file - Or you can EXPORT the data from ArcView
- Or move it in ArcCatalog
