Title: Library research for Chemists Seminar 4: Keeping up
1Library research for ChemistsSeminar 4
Keeping up
Todays slides http//www.lib.ncsu.edu/staff/jkw
ilson/instruction
- Josh Wilson
- Physical and Mathematical Sciences Reference
Librarian - North Carolina State University Libraries
2Outline
- Pulling it all together
- Citation management software (RefWorks)
- What you can do with it
- Keeping up
- Search alerts
- PES news blog
- RSS feeds
3Keeping track of all of your research
- How do you save all your research work?
- Citation management software
- Saves all references from most databases in ONE
place - RefWorks
- Available online from anywhere
- Competing products EndNote, ProCite
- Endnote sort of integrated with Web of Science
- Some newer products like Zotero are interesting
- Library site is a resource for help
- So is your librarian
- http//www.lib.ncsu.edu/guides/refworks/
4RefWorks account
- Lets take a few minutes now to create a RefWorks
account - Not related to unity ID/password
- It can be, but probably shouldnt
- Im not going to stop you
5How RefWorks Works
Web of Science Saved citations
Other databases Saved citations
SciFinder Scholar Saved citations
Export
- RefWorks
- Online access from anywhere through the
Libraries - Link to articles with Find Text tool
- Organize citations into multiple folders
- Create bibliographies
6(No Transcript)
7Creates a file containing your references
Exporting usually requires a couple of steps, but
pretty straightforward
8Then from within RefWorks, import the file
Just specify the database you pulled the
references from
9RefWorks exercise
- Go to Web of Science and do a search for
monosodium glutamate. - Follow the rest of the instructions to import
these citations into your RefWorks account
10RefWorks notes
- Lots of steps but conceptually simple
- Just need to know the right export/import filters
- And theyre usually straightforward
- Other import instructions in RefWorks guide
- http//www.lib.ncsu.edu/guides/refworks/
- Accounts are through the library, but you can
export your work - Take it with you to other institutions and import
- Endnote or ProCite users can transfer citations
11RefWorks exercise 2
- Follow the exercise instructions to import more
citations from SciFinder and the library catalog - (note that we cant do the exporting in SciFinder
in class thanks to the training login
restrictions)
12Extra stuff you can do
- Find saved papers with FindText link
- Share an account
- Work with a group on a research project
- Everyone can save to the same account, create a
shared literature database - Create a bibliography
- Write-N-Cite
13RefWorks exercise 3
- Follow the exercise instructions to make a
bibliography and use Write-N-Cite
14(No Transcript)
15(No Transcript)
16The future of citation management
- In the future?
- This will probably all get easier as web
applications improve - Competition from products like Zotero, EndNote
web - No need to save/import works from your browser
17Keeping up
- How do researchers stay caught up on all the
literature and news? - Alerts
- New literature notices sent to you via e-mail
- RSS feeds
- Blogs and news sites
- Journal tables of contents
18Alerts
- E-mail notices of new literature that fits your
search - Search alerts
- Citation alerts
- Table of contents updates
Heres an example e-mail from a Web of Science
Alert
This is a citation alert message a new article
is available in the database which cites Zhuang
et al
19Alerts
- Many databases use these
- Web of Science, Engineering Index
- SciFinder web
- Beilstein/Gmelin?
- Signing up
- Need to create an individual account within a
database (low commitment no spam) - Conduct a search in a database
- Save the search to create an alert
20Alerts examples
- Web of Science
- Conduct search
- Set up alert via Search History (My Saved
Searches) - Save History you will have the option to set up
an alert for the last search completed - Receive e-mail weekly or monthly listing any new
matches - (Other databases may do this as well)
21Table of Contents
- Option 1
- Via publisher
- Go to publisher website or library journal
subscription - Look for option to sign up for alert
- Get e-mail notice whenever a new issue is
published
- Option 2
- My Alerts option
- Click on My Alerts link on library site
- Select journal(s) of interest
- Get e-mail notice whenever a new issue is
published
22Blogs and news sites
- NCSU Libraries Physical and Engineering News
Blog - http//www.lib.ncsu.edu/news/pes/
- Postings on current research done at NCSU
- New books and articles
- Search tips and database updates
- Many other science and publisher blogs
23RSS feeds
- RSS is the easy way to monitor multiple blogs,
news, and websites - http//www.blip.tv/file/205570/
- RSS readers are free
- e.g., Bloglines, Google Reader
- Sometimes works through your e-mail, browser
24RSS exercise
- Set up a feed reader
- Subscribe to the Libraries PES News chemistry
blog - Subscribe to one or more RSS feeds from ACS
25Getting help later
- Ask-A-Librarian for on-demand,
non-chemistry specific help - PAMS wiki
- E-mail, call, or IM your librarian
- http//www.lib.ncsu.edu/staff/jkwilson/
- Help selecting/using databases
- Help finding information
- Quick help, or consultations
