Open Source and Java Technology

2
Presentation Overview
  • Open Source Initiative
  • Linux
  • Java Technology
  • Mozilla
  • Open Office
  • Netscape Browser

3
Open Source Initiative
  • The Idea Behind Open Source
  • This allows programmers to go in, read and
understand a software so that they can
redistribute information and be able to change
the source code for this piece of software so it
has the capability to morph into something more.
Once this has happened, people have a chance to
get use to it to be able to fix bugs that come
up, and improve it all together. With Open Source
being as fast as it is, we can work at
    unbelievable speeds.

4
Open Source Software
  • The two main operating functions are Open Source
Initiative and Open Source, allow businesses to
use them so that the business can better itself.
By doing this, the program must include the
Source Code and allow distribution of the Source
Code in compiled form so that a programmer can
make any possible corrections as needed.

5
Source Code
  • The program must include source code, and must
allow distribution in source code as well as
compiled form. Where some form of a product is
not distributed with source code, there must be a
well-publicized means of obtaining the source
code for no more than a reasonable reproduction
    costpreferably, downloading via the Internet
    without charge

6
Examples of Open Source
  • Linux is a clone of the operating system Unix,
written from scratch by Linus Torvalds with
assistance from a loosely-knit team of hackers
across the Net. It aims towards POSIX and Single
    UNIX Specification compliance.
  • http//www.kernel.org/

7
  • Apart from the fact that it's freely distributed,
    Linux's functionality, adaptability and
robustness, has made it the main alternative for
proprietary Unix and Microsoft operating systems.

8
Liniux
  • IBM, Hewlett-Packard and other giants of the
computing world have embraced Linux and support
its ongoing development. Well into its second
decade of existence, Linux has been adopted
worldwide primarily as a server platform. Its use
as a home and office desktop operating system is
also on the rise. The operating system can also
be incorporated directly into microchips in a
process called "embedding" and is increasingly
being used this way in appliances and devices.

9
Java Technology is Created
  • Java technology was created as a computer
programming tool in a small, secret effort called
"the Green Project" at Sun Microsystems in 1991.
The team planned for the next wave in computers
and the result was a device-independent
    programming language code-named "Oak.

10
Java Technology Part 2
  • In fact, its versatility, efficiency, platform
portability, and security have made it the ideal
technology for network computing, so that today,
Java powers more than 2.5 billion devices
  • over 800 million PCs
  • over 1.2 billion mobile phones and other handheld
    devices (source Ovum)
  • 1.65 billion smart cards
  • plus set-top boxes, printers, web cams, games,
    car navigation systems, lottery terminals,
medical devices, parking payment stations, etc.

12
Duke
  • Duke was originally created Joe Palrang to be the
"agent" for the Green Project at Sun. Duke became
the Java mascot when Java technology was first
announced, right around the same time that the
first Java cup logo was commissioned.
  • Duke is the friendly mascot of Java technology.
As the embodiment of the platform that's running
on 2 billion devices, Duke is everywhere!

13
Mozilla
  • Netscape Navigator was just another name for
Mozilla back when it was first getting started.
The source code named Mozilla soon became their
visual icon which eventually transferred into
    being their common name.

14
Mozilla
  • The mission of the Mozilla project is to preserve
choice and innovation on the Internet.
  • We are
  • The producer and provider of the award-winning
Firefox web browser and Thunderbird e-mail
    software.
  • A software development tools provider.
  • An open source community of developers and
    testers.
  • A partner for the technology industry.
  • An advocate for standards on the Net who provides
tools for developing standard web content.
  • Educators, providing educational materials about
    Internet technologies and software development.

15
Explorer vs. Mozilla
  • Mozilla is faster which enables it to run better.
  • It downloads its own protection options to make
surfing the internet easier with little or no
    distractions.
  • Internet Explorer is integrated with windows and
    has many problems.
  • Internet Explorer uses ActiveX which causes
    loopholes in the system.

16
OpenOffice
  • OpenOffice.org is a multiplatform and
multilingual office suite and an open-source
    project

17
OpenOffice
  • OpenOffice has three main categories that it
    composed of
  • Incubator- Community Sponsored Projects.
  • Accepted- Technical and Non- Technical
    Projects.
  • Native-Lang- Native Language Projects.

18
Netscape Browser
  • Netscape is another way to surf the world wide
web. Netscape is competing with Internet Explore
but it still has different features to offer its
users such as Profiles, a security center, real
time feeds and many other things.

19
Conclusion
  • I agree that both Open Source Software and Java
Technology vital assets in the technological
industry and by these two programs contributing
together in different and similar ways they help
to improve our PCs and other devices for the
    future.
