Certification by Local Educational Agency

• Local Educational Agency (LEA) is defined by 20
  U.S.C. 8801 as a public board of education or
  other public authority legally constituted within
  a state for either administrative control or
  direction of, or to perform a service function
  for, any public elementary or secondary school in
  the state. It can also refer to such combination
  of school districts or counties as are recognized
  in a state as an administrative agency for its
  public elementary or secondary schools. Local
  school districts are often referred to as LEAs in
  grant or funding documents.
• LEAs are responsible for all certification
  (eligibility determinations) and verification
  activities.
