3Medical Waste Tracking Act
Medical Waste tracking Act of 1988 defines
medical waste as "any solid waste that is

15Benefits to Segregation
- Cost Reduction
- Â Cost reduction is achieved by ensuring waste is
being segregated effectively and handled
efficiently. An Action Plan must be followed to
effectively reduce costs. - Â Segregation
- Â Improper segregation leads solid waste being
handled as part of the regulated medical waste
stream. This improper segregation can greatly
increase your total costs. - Â For example, one pound of paper will cost
- Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â 0.290 if it is disposed of as medical
waste and - Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â 0.029 if it is disposed of as solid
waste - Regulated Medical Waste
- From most surveys we estimate 10 of medical
waste is unnecessarily be disposed of as solid
trash. By diverting this amount from the medical
waste stream a cost reduction can be achieved. - Â Attaining and Maintaining Waste Reduction
- Â Waste management is attained through the
implementation of a well thought out waste
minimization program. This will involve
promotional signage, performing in-service
sessions and regulated medical waste volume
reviews on a quarterly basis. Maintaining waste
reduction is only accomplished through continual
support and feedback to the involved parties.
This does require attention and effort on the
facilities part. Stericycle will make available
computer and bar code tracking systems to help
you track and control your medical waste stream.
