6Many people keep garden spades and forks in their
sheds which can be used as tools to help the
burglar force entry to your home The windows
should also be screened with curtains and fitted
with a lock, or sealed, if designed to open.
Most burglars enter a house through secluded
windows and doors at the rear or side, so it is
important to prevent access to this area
A highly visible bell box of an intruder alarm
system can act as a powerful deterrent to the
thief.
The rear garden of a property is more private
than the front and PIR switched halogen units are
a strong deterrent to intruders. Consider angling
the sensor to ensure that the light will come on
where the perimeter is most likely to be
breached. Make sure the lights are located out of
reach to prevent tampering.
Fencing, brickwork and planting at the front of
your home should be kept low, but make sure your
fence or wall does not provide 'seats' which will
attract children
Ladders, garden furniture, wheelie bins and
anything else which a determined burglar could
stand on to gain entrance to your property should
be locked away in a secure place
A porch light to help identify night time
visitors is essential
Cars should ideally be parked in a garage
overnight. But if you do not have a garage, or
own a second car and are forced to park on the
driveway or the road outside your property, do
ensure it is adequately protected
Ensure that doors, windows, boot and sunroof are
locked after parking your car Always set the
alarm and immobiliser when you get out of the car
