The Preparation
  • Mentally prepare yourself to take good notes.
  • Read the material in advance.
  • Prepare yourself physically Get a good nights
    sleep, and get to class on time. Get the best
    seat, and get your notebook ready.

The Note-taking Process
  • Always use 8 ½ x 11 paper, preferably in a loose
    leaf notebook.
  • Write on only one side of the paper.
  • Draw two vertical lines on your paper, one two
    inches from the left edge and the other an inch
    from the right.
  • Left key words Rightyour reactions
  • Middle is for the lecture notes.
  • Write in ink with a felt-tip pen for speed.

Active listening and organization is the key.
  • Before writing, listen to understand the point
    being made.
  • Copy what instructor writes on board.
  • Use instructor notes for main points.
  • Skip lines between main sections.
  • Number the points.

  • Dont write in complete sentences, but in
    complete phrases.
  • Use your own words.
  • DO take down definitions ,formulas, or technical
    terms verbatim.
  • Leave space for missing information and get from
    a classmate.

  • In the left-hand column, write a few key words
    and phrases that summarize the points of the
