• Imports of beef have not been as large as
  anticipated
• Challenges
• Import permit required
• Identifying and guaranteeing animal under 30
  months of age
• Boneless fresh/frozen beef only
• Increased cull cow and bull meat supply
• Lack of slaughter capacity
• Increased feeder and slaughter hog imports to
  U.S.
• U.S. hog production larger than anticipated in
  2003 and 2004

Canadian Update

• Proposal for resuming live cattle trade
• Subjected to a federal rule making process
• Currently at the Office of Management Budgets
• 90 day period to complete draft proposal
• Published in Federal Register
• Minimum 30 day comment period
• Analysis of comments received (minimum 30 days)
• Live cattle trade expected to resume in first
  quarter of 2004.

• BSE discovered in Japan last week
• 23-month old Holstein bull/steer
• Two of the Three BSE tests are positive
• Unusual case given age of animal
• Could be a new case of BSE
• Impact on U.S. different than Canadian situation
• Japanese vs. Canadian consumers
