Three Ways to Classify Governments
  • 1. Geographic Distribution of Power
  • A. Unitary- one central govt, but no (weak)
    local govt.
  • B. Federal- power divided between central govt.
    several local govts.

  • 2. Number of persons who take part in governing.
  • A. Dictatorship- one person in charge who is
NOT tied to the will of people
  • -authoritarian- authority over people
  • -totalitarianism-rule over ALL aspects of
    life

  • B. Democracy- power in the hands of the people.
  • Two types of democracy
  • -Direct- All people make all decisions in
    small groups
  • -Representative- Small group, chosen by
larger group, make decisions based on
    popular opinion.

    and buy a bull.

12
Federalism
  • Shared Powers- between national government
    (D.C.) and regional governments (states)
