Title: Honoring Our Veterans

1
Honoring Our Veterans
  • Project Challenge
  • November 2006

2
President Lincoln
  • Inspired the motto of the Veterans Administration
  • To care for him who shall have borne the battle
and for his widow and orphan.

3
Who is a Veteran?
  • Veterans are people who served in the military
(U.S. Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, and
Coast Guard) in times of war or peace.

4
A Veteran I Know
Brenda said that her son was in the navy and
that he had a bad injury. Just to let you know he
got shot in the knee and the elbow. The very next
day he was in the hospital and still in the navy.
A couple months later he was back in action.

Veterans Day
  • On a Veterans Day we thank and honor those who
served in the military. Veterans Day is observed
on November 11th of each year.

7
  • Veterans Day was formerly known as Armistice
Day, to commemorate the end of World War I in
    1918.

8
  • On Veterans Day we remember the men and women
of our Armed Forces who have come together to
fight for our country. Theyve defended America
when our borders, our people and our way of life
    have been threatened.

9
This day reminds us to care for those who served
in our nations defense and the families of those
killed in its service.
10
VA History
  • 1789 A law was passed to give money to soldiers
who fought in the American Revolutionary War.
  • 1862 President Lincoln started national
cemeteries. This was to honor the many Union dead
    from the Civil War.

11
VA History
  • 1865 President Lincoln asked Congress to care
for him who shall have borne the battle and for
    his widow, and his orphan.

12
VA History
  • 1944 A lot of people were hurt and killed in
World War II. On June 22, 1944, President
Roosevelt signed the GI Bill of Rights. This
helped veterans go to college and buy a home.

13
Veterans Health Administration
  • Did you know that the Veterans Health
Administration (VHA) is the largest health care
    system in the United States?
  • VHA gives first class health care to our
    veterans.

14
Did you know this about veterans?
  • Of the 25 million living veterans, most (75
percent) served during a war or an official
    period of hostility.

15
Proper Display of Flag
  • Display of the American flag is usually from
    sunrise to sunset.
  • The flag should be displayed daily on or near the
main building of every public place and during
school days in or near every schoolhouse.

16
Proper Display of Flag Pt 2
  • Flags are flown at half-staff to show grief for
    lives lost.
  • When two or more flags are flown from the same
pole, the American flag must be on top.

17
Technology
  • The VA uses a lot of technology. All patient
charts are on the computer. VA uses special bar
codes to be sure there are no mix-ups when
patients get their pills in the hospital.
Veterans get their medicines mailed right to
their homes. This is called the computerized mail
    out pharmacy.

18
Technology
  • Have you heard of Telemedicine?Telemedicine
uses special equipment and computers. It allows
people miles away from each other to talk
face-to-face. This helps veterans who might not
be able to travel far to see a special doctor. VA
uses satellite shows to train staff.

19
  • "We see soldiers as serious and gray-haired.
But most of them were boys when they died, and
they gave up two lives, the one they were living
and the one they would have lived. When they
died, they gave up their chance to be husbands
and fathers and grandfathers. They gave up their
chance to be revered old men. They gave up
everything for our country, for us. And all we
    can do is remember."
  • - Ronald Reagan
