- Action Plan 2. The District will employ staff
in all job classifications who are
multi-culturally proficient and who reflect the
Districts diverse learner population.

- Action Plan 3 The District will increase the
retention rate for all current and new staff of
- color.
- In 2003-04, our staff turnover was 126
employees, 25 of them were people of color. This
amounts to 20 of the total turnover. The same
pattern holds true today. - Exit interview both written and oral should be
standardized and data collected. Our goal for
2006-07 is to formalize the exit interview
process and continue many of our interventions.

multicultural curriculum and supplemental
materials, which authentically reflect our
diverse, global community.
- Elementary music teachers have produced a 5 disk
set of instructions on how to teach the
- gamelan curriculum.

- The instructions are based on the three-year
residency that was funded by the deseg budget.
- Elementary music teachers purchased materials to
introduce African drumming
- into music program.
- Leveled multicultural reading materials have been
purchased for K-5 classrooms to enhance the
- district curriculum
- Multicultural history videos were purchased for
the High School media centers.

Action Plan 6 All district buildings will cre
ate an environment that both visually reflects
and academically supports the Districts goal of
inclusiveness of all ethnic groups and cultures.

Action Plan 7 All staff will have high
expectations for all students to achieve or
exceed District and State standards regardless of
their cultural or racial backgrounds.
- Purchase of teacher resource materials for all
buildings (K-12) on meeting the needs of diverse
learners and differentiation of curriculum and
instruction. -
- Continue to develop and refine cluster grouping
program at elementary, middle school Honors
program and Honors/AP/CIS programs at High
school. - Implementation of LAUNCH at Olson Middle and
Valley View Middle.
- 9 elementary and all middle schools had 34 teams
that competed at Destination Imagination regional
competition in March. Westwood and OMS teams
advanced to State!

Action Plan 7 All staff will have high
expectations for all students to achieve or
exceed District and State standards regardless of
their cultural or racial backgrounds.
- Supported Kennedy High School initiative to
increase the number of students of color in
honors and AP courses.
- Developing a new program at VVMS based on the
Launch program. This program would develop
academic skills of middle school students of
color and from low-income backgrounds in seeking
honors and AP course status in high school and
assist in achieving Scholars status at Kennedy
High School. This would incorporate effective
learning/study strategies, leadership
initiatives, Critical and Creative thinking
skills, and mentorship possibilities. More
information on this program to follow.

Action Plan 8 The District will increase
participation of families of color in all
district functions.
- Provide transportation as requested by
parents/schools to conferences.
- Assist CEC with recruiting parents/students of
color to be on Advisory Committee.
- Surveys sent to families of diverse backgrounds
in our District.
- District Cultural Celebration enhanced families
participation.
- Focus groups and activities at buildings
embracing diversity helped families feel welcome
and valued.

Action Plan 9 The District will provide school
related information to learners
in the Districts identified primary languages.
- Language Ambassador program continues for
learners and their families as needed.
- At years end, we have 75 experienced
interpreters/translators who are on-call when any
of our schools need assistance with language.
- Thirty-nine Language Ambassadors specialize in
Special Education interpreting.

- In the second half of this year we saw a marked
increase in use of the program and in the number
of requests for rare languages.

Action Plan 10 All learners will demonstrate
increased knowledge and understanding of people
with diverse backgrounds.
- Continued to provide Kindergarten Crossings
classrooms at 2 sites,
- serving 48 students. We also provided a
prerequisite to Kindergarten Crossings to 100
pre-k students- Make Tracks to Kindergarten.
- Artscapade had 205 students enrolled for a
cultural arts program experience in August,
2005.
- There are presently over 500 active members in
all Cultural Mentoring groups---his includes
memberships in Shades of Brown, Latino Club.
Dreamcatchers, and Asian Club. - Ongoing support at IEPs.
- Tutoring support for at risk American Indian
students (10) .
- Valley View Elementary Parent Involvement
Coordinator continues to actively support the
building in a variety of capacities.
