Title: The Effect Adrenaline has on Athletes

1
The Effect Adrenaline has on Athletes
  • By Dylan Carrington-Fair

2
Abstract
  • The purpose of this experiment is to learn how
    adrenaline affects basketball athletes when
    shooting 30 baskets.
  • My hypothesis is that as they make baskets, the
amount of adrenaline in their bodies will
increase. With the increase in adrenaline, they
are expected to be more successful in making
baskets and do so in a type of pattern.
  • In the first step of my procedure, I will gather
    all materials.
  • Then I will find 10 basketball athletes.
  • Continued

3
Abstract Continued
  • The next thing I will do is test them by asking
them to shoot the basketball 30 times at the free
    throw line.
  • I will record whether for each shot they make a
    basket or not.
  • Next I will go home and place the information on
    the computer.
  • I will examine the pattern they shoot in.
  • I will collect all information into a summary.
  • Last I will present the information at the
    science fair.
  • Continued

4
Abstract Continuation
  • This type of experiment is a research and field
    test project.
  • I will observe and take notes on the athletes and
see if they made or missed their shots.
  • I will also try to observe a pattern.
  • I will do this during lunch and break hours for a
    few days.
  • I will test ten people and they will all have the
chance of shooting thirty shots each.

Background
  • Adrenaline is a hormone produced by our bodies
when we are under stress and threatened.
  • The body reacts to these situations by quickly
increasing the bodys adrenaline flow, providing
    an adrenaline rush.
  • Adrenaline tenses your muscles and increases your
    heart rate and respiration.
  • Since adrenaline tenses the muscles, increases
blood flow and the amount of oxygen in the
bloodstream then it gives the athlete more focus
allowing them to make their shots.
  • Continued

6
Background Continued
  • Athletes, including basketball players, also
experience adrenaline rushes which improve their
    physical performance.
  • As basketball athletes start to successfully make
baskets, he will have a psychological boost that
will increase the flow of adrenaline in his body.
  • This boost will allow him to successfully make
even more baskets in a type of pattern.

7
Purpose
  • I am doing this experiment to learn how an
adrenaline rush affects the performance of
basketball athletes when shooting baskets around
    the court.

8
Hypothesis
  • Since adrenaline tenses the muscles, increases
blood flow and the amount of oxygen in the
bloodstream, an adrenaline rush would improve a
    persons physical performance, allowing
basketball players to make better shots for a
    longer period of time.
  • As a basketball player starts to make baskets, he
will have a psychological boost that will cause
an increase in the flow of adrenaline, an
    adrenaline rush.
  • Continued

9
Hypothesis Continued
  • As the amount of adrenaline in the basketball
player increases, his performance will improve.
  • Out of a certain number of attempts, his success
rate for making baskets will increase.

10
Materials
  • Ten basketball athletes.
  • One basketball.
  • One basketball hoop.
  • One basketball court.
  • Paper.
  • Pencil.
  • Eraser.

11
Procedure
  • Get materials.
  • Gather ten basketball athletes.
  • Test them by making them shoot thirty baskets.
  • Take observations on the baskets they miss and
    the baskets they make.
  • Go home and place the information on the
    computer.
  • Examine the pattern of shots.
  • Gather all information into a summary.
  • Present information in science fair.
