Introduction

• Although hair loss is strictly thought to be a
  male disease, in women it can have
  disastrous/catastrophic effect on the sufferer's
  self image and emotional and psychological well
  being.
• The most common type of hair loss seen in women
  is androgenetic alopecia, also known as female
  pattern alopecia or baldness. 
• There are two different types of hair loss,
  namely anagen effluvium and Telogen effluvium.

Causes

• Stress Physical or Emotional
• Thyroid abnormalities.
• Medications.
• Hormonal causes pregnancy, birth control pills,
  menopause.

Classification

• There are two widely known female hair loss
  density
• scales used by most hair loss specialists
• The Ludwig Scale
• The Savin Scale.
• For all intents and purposes, they are identical
  except that
• the Savin Scale also measures overall thinning.

Treatment Options for Female Pattern
Hair Loss

• Cosmetic options to give a fuller appearance to
  hair.
• Medical therapy Topical minoxidil and certain
  vitamins.
• Hair restoration surgery- Modern surgical
  techniques have made transplantation for females
  a viable treatment option provided that they are
  appropriate candidates and have realistic
  expectations.
