1
Media Studies Research project- Photography
  • By Kateryn-Anne Pulman

2
Julia Kennedy- Fashion
  • Kennedy has a portfolio that is a good mixture
of arty, the commercial and the Editorial.
  • The photograph to the right , is of Cara
Delevingne, it is an untitled piece. The purpose
of the shoot was commercial for Burberry, a
clothing line, it was shot in February 2011.
Kennedy says that in the shoot they wanted to get
    Caras fun side across.

3
Cara Delevinge 2011
  • This shot is very expressive, it shows Cara
crying and not looking directly into the camera.
The subject of the photo is Cara, it is a clear
shot, where Kennedy has centralised the subject,
your eyes are guided to Cara with a plain back
ground and Kennedy has used the rule of thirds.
Making Cara take up the whole of the middle
section, so Cara is emphasized. The focus also
links into what I previously said, Cara is
Central so youre evidently drawn to Cara and
facial expression makes you look at her eyes, as
the colour is very bright compared the pale face
and light hair , with a lighter back drop. So
there is a contrast between the colours used.

4
Tim Tadder- Commercial
  • Tadder worked on newspapers in Baltimore before
turning his sights on commercial and editorial
photography in 2005. since then he has been
commissioned to make portraits with George W Bush
and Bill Gates. Tadder has worked with the likes
of ice cube, Kid Rock and Michael Phelps.
  • Best known for his powerful portraits and high
    action intense sports imagery.
  • Tadder commented on his latest shoot, Water wigs
2012, saying I got tired of repeating the same
thing all the time and saying that he wanted a
visual concept that he had never seen before.

5
Water Wigs 2012
  • Tadder had an intention for this shot, he wanted
to carry on a water theme after his last shoot.
The subject of the photo is the water, its very
central to the photo. The focus is drawn to the
water as its brighter than the rest of the photo.
The background is bright but the because the
water is different lighter and brighter colours
youre immediately focused on and fixed on the
    water.
  • The shot has a very direct approach, Tadder
hasnt used an angle. He directed you straight to
    the man.

6
Jim Marshall- Music
  • Marshall started photography in the 60s, just
doing album covers by the late 70s hes shooting
the who for rolling stone magazine!
  • Marshall commented on his career saying I've
been very lucky what can I say? The access was
great and uhthis has been my life doin' pictures
and it's never just been a job it's been my
life. Marshall has wanted the atmosphere of the
music to come across in his photos and has full
access to some of the greats, Inc. Janis Joplin,
The Beatles, Jimmy Page, Keith Moon and many
    more!

7
Jimi Hendrix 1968
  • The clothes that Jim Hendrix are wearing, imply
that the event in which he was performing at was
lively and colourful. The facial expression
conveys a sense of emotion because of the way his
mouth is opened, suggesting that he was
concentrating on singing something powerful to
the audience. The bright lighting used on his
body show that Marshall was trying to direct you
to Hendrix and he is the main focus of the shot.

8
Cindy Sherman- portraits, conceptual art,
fashion, music and film
  • Sherman is an American photographer, some of her
photographs are portraits of herself in various
scenarios that parody stereotypes of women. She
rose to fame in the early 1980s, when she
presented a series of untitled film stills
across America and Europe. Among 130 film
stills taken between 1978-80, Sherman portrays
such screen idols as Marilyn Monroe and Sophia
Loren. Shermans early work can range from quiet
introspection to provocative sensuality, in the
late 80s to early 90s Shermans work took a
different path and started looking quite scary
and they show elements of horror and decay.

9
Untitled film still no. 11 1978
  • Sherman was trying to recreate some powerful film
shots, I think she has succeeded and it implies
that women in early film were less than a men,
the way she is positioned she directs you to the
rest of the room, showing you its quite bland and
she is the main focus. The Angle of the shot
elongates her body suggesting grace and elegance,
also suggesting this is the outfit she is
wearing. White lace was usually associated with
innocence and purity, implying that she was a
    young model.

10
Neil Leifer- Sports, Celebrities, Publication and
Magazines
  • Leifers career has been on going for over 50
years starting in the 1960s, when he was just a
teen. His work has been published in some of the
major magazines including LIFE, look and more
    often Sports illustrated.
  • He has photographed the likes of, J.F Kennedy,
Muhammad Ali, Pope John Paul II and the cast of
Rocky II. Also in his career he has taken some
beautiful shots of places, war and nature.

11
Mike Tyson with Baby 2002
  • The contrast between the two models is showing a
different side to the famous boxer Mike Tyson. It
is conveying caring a gentle quality's in him,
because he is holding the baby so delicately this
therefore contrasts to his violent life style,
Leifer has shown this through making the shot a
direct approach and shown a different side of
human nature that it can change depending on the
    setting and the person.
