2I've just sent a letter inviting the Dalai Lama
to Kansas City to help with interfaith peace and
reconciliation dialogue, which is being
hand-carried along with others by a Missouri
delegation to Dharamsala, India, where he lives.
Seems to me that public discussion about body
cameras and technology ain't gonna quite do it
regarding endemic racism and brutality in our
system, conditioned by fear, aggression, and
inequality. I believe that inner tools and
technology are also needed and available, and
could fairly swiftly be brought to bear. We
Buddhist teachers and practitioners, trainers and
higher educators have a well-researched,
tried-and-true ages-old technique for helping an
individual intervene between stimulus and
response in the automatic reaction system (and
amygdala response) of the police-person on the
street when challenged. Its called Mindful Anger
Management or more broadly, Mindful Re activity
Training and could easily be instituted widely
to help ease this crisis and progress together in
our stricken society. This kind of mindful
awareness training doesn't slow down your
reaction time, but actually speeds up and
sharpens mental processing so one can actually
count to ten before you hit back, as my Granny
used to tell me, or think before you act as my
Dad used to intone like a mantra.Article Source
