Title: Dr. Donald Sonn Stone Disease

1
Dr. Donald Sonn Stone Disease
  • Dr. Donald Sonn is a urologist who practices at
the Urology Group of Western New England in
    Springfield, Massachusetts, where he specializes
in impotence, prostheses, and stone disease.

2
  • As he knows better than most, stone disease is a
common condition that affects more than five
percent of all adults in the United States.
Nearly two million people visit their doctors or
go to an emergency room every year seeking
treatment for this painful condition, which is
one of the most common non-cancerous disorders of
the urinary tract. The number of people suffering
with kidney stones has been rising almost every
    year.

3
  • Dr. Donald Sonn says that men are more likely to
develop a kidney stone than are women, and white
people are more likely to develop one than are
African Americans, or those of other race or
ethnic group. Obesity may be a factor in the
chances of someone developing a kidney stone, but
that is not known for certain.

4
  • There is nothing new about kidney stones.
Researchers have found evidence of kidney stones
in mummified Egyptian remains more than seven
thousand years old. Dr. Donald Sonn says that
they most often develop in people in mid-life, at
a time when work and family commitments are at
    their highest.
  • In recent years, treatment for kidney stones has
    included minimally invasive surgery techniques
that have been very effective. Dr. Donald Sonn,
who has been trained in the da Vinci System and
in GreenLight Laser, says that these newer
technologies help physicians to manage kidney
    stones. Other treatment options include
    medications and diet.
