KERALAS COMMUNIST PARTY DOMINANCE
The state holds a constant position of having the
largest politically aware and active population
in the country. Elections here are also held to
choose representatives of the civic bodies at
different level within the state. Politics in
Kerala is dominated by two unions The Communist
Party of India led Left Democratic Front (LDF)
and the Indian National Congress led United
Democratic Front (UDF). These two unions have
been alternatively voted to the power since 1982.
In Kerala it is difficult for a single party to
participate and win even a single seat, because
the voters perception is towards voting for a
front. According to 2011 Kerala Legislative
Assembly election results, the UDF has a majority
in State Assembly. Most of the political parties
accept Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP), belong to one
or other of these two alliances. The political
unions have stabilized strongly in such a manner
that with very rare exceptions, most of the union
partners stick their honesty to the respective
alliances. As a result of this 1979, the power
has been clearly alternating between the two
fronts without any exception.

The Malabar region, especially Kannur and
Palakkad are considered to heartland of Communist
Parties. The largest communist party in terms of
membership is CPI (M) and the second is CPI.
Kerala is the first Indian state where the
communists were voted to power. The Indian
National Party has a very strong attendance in
Kerala. Since the early 1980s these two
coalitions have alternated in government with
neither Front able to gain re-election for a
second term. Clashes between supporters of the
two unions have occurred periodically.
