Title: Presentation/ Pitch for short film...
1Concept
- We would consider our short film to be classified
as a psychological thriller as the narrative
constantly keeps the audience questioning what
the truth is. We have taken inspiration from a
range of different modern movies such as
2Narrative
- The narrative begins with Jack in an interview
room, it is not yet established why, and he is
asked tell me about Destiny. - Jack meets up with Destiny in a local park area.
They are established to have a very close
relationship but Destiny is established to be
holding the power within the relationship as she
motivates him to do immoral things (start fights,
steal etc.) - Flashes forward to the interview room, which is
now established as some sort of crime
investigation, he is asked about his connection
to an incident concerning Myra Summers. - We then flash back to Jacks first meeting with
Myra who introduces herself as a concerned family
friend who wants to stage an intervention for
Jack as he has gotten himself on a rocky path.
But Destiny appears and manipulates Jack into
thinking that Myra is trying to take her away
from him. - Jack takes her hostage in a dramatic climax and
begs to know why Myra wants to take away the one
friend who was there for him when nobody else was
Destiny. But Destiny is not visible to Myra. - We then flashback to Jacks childhood where we
see him neglected by his parents his father is
a raging alcoholic and his mother always worked
over in the office therefore he subconsciously
created Destiny as a friend to cope with his lack
of love. - This jumps back to the hostage scene where Jack
is deciding whether he should do the right thing
of let Destiny go. - We return back to the interview which is now
established as a mental hospital as a doctor is
giving Jack a full analysis. Jack is retained for
ABH towards Myra Summers and his mental
instability.
3Title Ideas
- The Voices reflects the central characters
fragile mental state. - Destiny eponymous to the character of Destiny
which sets her up as the main plot device. It
also has a dual meaning which could simply mean
the main of the character or Jacks future
therefore posing a range of questions to the
audience. - The Haunting falsely alludes the audience into
believing that the title is referring to the old
woman haunting the central character when, in
actual fact, he is haunting himself with his
personal deception of the truth. - Sirens recurring motif of red and blue police
sirens as the narrative vacillates between the
tragic event and present day for the central
character.
4Characters
- Jack central character the plot revolves
around the events that led to his mental breaking
point and crime. - Destiny Jacks imaginary friend she is the
devil on his shoulder and his main motivator for
his immoral actions. He seeks comfort in her due
to the lack of love that he receives from his
parents. - Myra family friend of Jacks she is a
middle-aged, spiritual lady who believes in
healing and cleansing the mind of impure
thoughts. She reaches out to Jack out of concern
for his irrational behaviour.
5Mise En Scene
Lighting Stage lighting and dimed lighting to
create suspense in dramatic scenes, natural
lighting and shadows to contrast with the darker
nature of the narrative and to make it appear
realistic to the audience. Setting White box
interview room, Jacks home, natural/familiar
setting e.g. park, dark room for hostage
scene. Prop Mobile phone to create a modern day
setting, book and doll to show how he
subconsciously created Destiny, tape recorder to
establish an interview setting, rope to signal
dangerous behaviour. Sound effects diegetic
(e.g. footsteps, tape recorder click, tapping of
finders on the desk) and non- diegetic sound
(e.g. Police sirens, music to create a tense
atmosphere within scenes.) Costume Modern day
clothing to establish that its a present day
period drama.
6Audience Profile
- The audience for this type of genre often watch
crime dramas which cause them to engage with the
plot of film, they also tend to watch horrors as
it creates a fear factor. It helps build up
tension and enigma which is what makes a
psychological thriller successful, in engaging
with the audience and attracting their attention
which is what we are hoping to achieve within the
smaller time-frame of a short film. - We have a target audience of teenagers and young
adults due to the recurring motif within the
piece of being in control of your destiny. The
overall message of this is to stay honest and
true to your own morals without being led astray
by any negative influences or things that may
have happened to you.
7Themes, Time and Technology
The main theme within our film is the reference
to his mental state, however other themes are
present such as the flashbacks used and they all
tie together to create a more effective
representation of his mental state. We are also
able to show things from his perspective as well
as from other peoples. Time We want to set it
in modern times as it gives us more ways to show
the narrative, it also means we are able use a
larger variety of props related to the narrative.
Technology Stage lighting for dramatic effect
, mobile phones to shows that the narrative is
set in modern times. Use of Facebook/ Twitter to
show that Jack is a modern everyday person.
