3Live-in Caregiver Program Details
Live-in caregivers are individuals who are
qualified to provide care for children, elderly
persons or persons with disabilities in private
homes without supervision. Both the employer and
the employee must follow several steps to meet
the requirements of the Live-In Caregiver
Program. In order to qualify as a live-in
caregiver in Canada, you must meet 3 minimum
requirements set for Citizenship and Immigration
Canada (CIC). You must meet all of these
requirements in order to be considered eligible
for the Live-in Caregiver Program.
41. Successful completion of the equivalent of
Canadian secondary school education.
5Exactly how the equivalency translates to your
level of education depends upon your countrys
education system. You should check with your
local Canadian Embassy or Consulate to see
exactly what minimum level of education you
require from your country of permanent residence
in order meet the requirement of Canadian
secondary school completion. This requirement
ensures that LCP participants that apply for
permanent residency after two years of successful
employment will be able to compete and find work
in the general labour market.
62. Six months of full-time training or twelve
months of full-time paid employment in an
occupation or field that is related to the job of
a live-in caregiver.
7In order to claim training, you must have
attended full-time training in a classroom
setting. Areas of study can include childhood
education, pediatric nursing, geriatric care or
first aid. If you claim experience, you need to
have been employed for one year with at least six
continuous months of that year employed with one
employer. This employment must be in an
occupation or field similar to that of what you
would do employed as a live-in caregiver.
Additionally, this work experience must be
acquired within three years before the day on
which you submit your work permit application.
83. Fluency in either the English or French
Language
Your must be able to speak, read and understand
English or French so that you are able to work
independently in your employers home. Since you
will be unsupervised for most of the day, you may
have to communicate with someone outside for the
home. For example, what if you need to call
emergency services? Or, you may need to read and
understand medication labels as part of your
job. A solid knowledge of either language will
also ensure that you are able to read and
understand what your rights and obligations are
as a live-in caregiver.
