  • What is Technical Writing. Technical writing is a
clear and concise form of writing. The planning
process and purpose of a technical document are
important aspects. After reading Chapter One,
research the Online Library and the Internet for
    additional information about what technical
writing is and how it is different from other
    types of writing.

  • ASHFORD ENG 328 Week 2 DQ 1 Collaborative Writing
    Process
  • Target Audience. Understanding who the audience
is and how to meet their needs is critical for a
technical writer. For example, a writer would
develop a technical science document much
differently for a team of scientists than they
would for audience without a background in
science. Explain why it is important to identify
the target audience for a document. What role
does the audience's demographics play in
    analyzing the target audience?
  • Select one of the following scenarios and
describe an appropriate audience, the purpose,
and at least two mediums for delivery of the
    message
  • Collaborative Writing Process. Often, large or
    complex writing projects are done
    collaboratively. Collaborative writing projects
require the input from several different people
and often produce a final product with more ideas
and insights than if done by just one person. You
are the team leader for team of five for a
writing project. Describe the advantages and
    disadvantages to writing collaboratively. How
would you organize the collaborative writing
project? What would you do to ensure consistency
    among the writers and timeliness?

  • ASHFORD ENG 328 Week 3 DQ 1 Web Design and
    Readability
  • Design and Graphics. Good document design
includes effective use of white space and colors.
Graphics are often used to provide a snapshot of
a large amount of data or to illustrate a topic.
Poorly designed pages can take away from the
intended message of the document. Explain how
graphs or charts can enhance a document and help
the audience understand the intended message.
What are some advantages and disadvantages to
    using photographs in a document?
  • Web Design and Readability. Organizing and
designing web pages should start with a clear
purpose and the intended audience. Online readers
expect speed and consistency and will quickly
leave a site if it is difficult to navigate.
Online readers prefer not to scroll horizontal
and expect to easily find information from the
site's homepage. Technical writers for the web
need to write clear and concise content, as well
as be aware of how visually appealing the
websites are to the audience. Too much text or
flashy animations can be distracting for the
    reader.

  • ASHFORD ENG 328 Week 3 DQ 2 Online Technical
    Documents
  • ASHFORD ENG 328 Week 4 DQ 1 Writing Instructions
  • Online Technical Documents. Online periodicals
are quickly replacing the traditional paper
    magazines. Most professional organizations have
free online periodicals that users can subscribe
to and read. These publications provide a source
of information for you to stay up to date with
current trends in your field of study or career.
Locate a professional online periodical or
    professional organization's website that relates
to your career or future career. For example,
students majoring in environmental studies can
search for Environmental Science and Technology.
  • Writing Instructions. Writing instructions is
common in the workplace. Instructions should be
clear and concise and begin with a verb. Write a
set of instructions using the techniques learned
in this week's reading assignment. You can write
instructions for an aspect of your job, a task
that you do at home, or a hobby. Provide an
introduction to your instructions and identify
any prerequisite skills needed. Assume the target
audience has little to no experience with your
topic. Do you think the use of images or graphics
would help? If so, how? Support your thoughts and
ideas with references from appropriate resources.

  • ASHFORD ENG 328 Week 4 DQ 2 Writing Proposals
  • ASHFORD ENG 328 Week 5 DQ 1 Presentations and
    Scientific Data
  • Writing Proposals. Proposals are documents that
offer a solution to a problem, propose a change,
or make a request. Proposals are often persuasive
in nature and can be solicited or unsolicited.
Share a change that is/was needed in your current
or previous job. Describe how you would develop a
proposal to address this change. Who would be
your audience? Would the proposal be formal or
informal? Explain your reasoning and support your
thoughts and ideas with references from
    appropriate resources.
  • Presentations and Scientific Data. Your manager
asked you to do a research project that involves
gathering scientific data from surveys and
interviews from many different sources. He has
asked you to compile your research results and
present this to your department. What are some
important elements to consider in the design of
your presentation? How would you present the data
to the audience? How would charts, graphs or
images help the audience understand the data
being presented? Support your thoughts and ideas
    with references from appropriate resources.
