Title: Craig Curk - Youth Soccer Coach

1
Craig Curk Youth Soccer Coach
Craig Curk has been a youth soccer coach for over
ten years. With a National D License, he has
led his U-15 boys team to tenth place in the
state cup championship in Bowling Green,
Kentucky. He played Division I soccer at Xavier
University while he was completing his BSBA in
Accounting, but he never lost the desire to be
involved with the sport. The Walking scorer job
is prestigious, and it can be difficult to get a
foot in the door initially. Take as many
volunteering opportunities as you possibly can to
build some credibility and be patient.

Craig Curk Tips To Become A Stronger Youth Sports
Coach
  • As a youth soccer coach who focuses on mentorship
and community-building, Craig Curk wants to help
all of his players achieve their goals. He knows
that taking on this role is a calling that
requires a big heart and a lot of patience.
Though there are many different styles that one
might follow, he says that there are a few
techniques that all of the best coaches employ.
  • Strong coaches use the sport as a vehicle for
educating their players about life. Children will
come up against hardship and obstacles in every
sport, and using these moments as teaching
opportunities help kids build a stronger sense of
    their capabilities.
  • With a focus on personalization, dynamic coaches
    approach their players individual learning
styles from a variety of angles to ensure that
all children receive what they need.
  • Coaches should always harbor compassion
regardless of what happens on the field. Helping
children build mental toughness is never a result
    of belittling or embarrassment.

Craig Curk Training Successful Youth Soccer
Goalkeepers
  • Craig Curk knows that coaching youth sports is a
good way to instill a sense of responsibility and
teamwork in children. As a former goalkeeper for
his universitys soccer program, he learned the
best practices for the position that supported
his team. He continues teaching these same
    principles today, as follows.
  • Youth coaches must teach players how to fall
safely. This goes for all members of the team,
but especially in the case of the goalkeeper
because its a necessary skill to successfully
block goals by the other team.
  • Make sure that your goalkeeper has good footwork.
Yes, theyre going to block passes with their
hands and body, but they are still a member of
the team and should be a part of the play when
    appropriate.
  • Teach your goalkeeper to have soft hands.
Oftentimes kids will punch or parry the ball away
because it hurts less than catching. The concept
of soft hands refers to the form of the catch,
using the fingertips instead of the palms to
    minimize that discomfort.
