5 Most Common Vision Problems in Seniors
As we reach our golden years, we become more
likely to develop a number of health related
conditions including vision problems due to an
unhealthy lifestyle. Some eye diseases can change
your senior loved ones vision permanently while
these can also be treated if detected earlier.
Cataracts and glaucoma are much more common
than any other age-related vision problem but
conjunctivitis and dry eyes are less severe than
others. However, dry eyes can become a routine
during winters because of recirculation of air
from the heater. According to Colorado home
health care experts impairing vision can lead
seniors to a number of complications in daily
life like an inability to drive, limited
mobility, loss of independence, social withdrawal
and also cause depression and anxiety.

Here are 5 most common age-related vision
problems found in seniors.
1. Age-Related Macular Degeneration Age-Related
Macular Degeneration (AMD) is a leading cause of
severe vision loss among older adults and causes
loss of central vision. Its symptoms incorporate
gradual loss of ability to clearly see objects,
distortion of shapes and objects, inability to
see colors clearly, and a dark area in the center
of vision.

2. Cataracts A cataract is an opaque or cloudy
part in the lens of the eye that may cause
blurred vision. It is one of the leading causes
of vision loss in the elderly. Hazy or blurred
vision, progressive difficulty seeing objects at
night, increased sensitivity to bright lights,
and decreased intensity of colors are common
symptoms of cataracts where depression and
anxiety play a major part.

3. Glaucoma Glaucoma is the second-leading cause
of vision loss among seniors it is, in fact, a
group of eye disorders. These disorders
progressively damage the optic nerve and
eventually result in loss of vision. Seniors are
advised to get an annual eye exam, especially
those with a family history of glaucoma.

4. Blepharitis Blepharitis is an infection or
inflammation of the eyelid and it may lead to
similar symptoms of dry eye. Its symptoms
incorporate itchy and irritated eyelids and
development of dandruff-like patches on
eyelashes. Though it is itchy and uncomfortable,
it is not infectious and doesnt typically cause
vision damage.

5. Other Vision Problems Diabetic retinopathy is
another cause of vision impairment in seniors. In
this condition seniors with diabetes endure
damaged blood vessels in the retina. Other health
conditions also contribute to vision impairment
including arthritis and high blood pressure.
Since these health issues are more common in
older adults, monitoring overall wellbeing gets
crucial.

Family caregivers are suggested to encourage
their elderly loved ones to maintain a healthy
lifestyle by eating nutritious foods and
involving in regular physical activity. Make
sure to include plenty of green vegetables and
colorful fruits in their diet, and consider
vision healthy vitamins and antioxidant
supplements to keep diabetes and blood pressure
under control, therefore, retain overall
wellbeing. You can also consider consulting a
well-known home care provider to offer the
expertise allowing your loved one maintain a high
quality of life while they age in place and you
