2What Is Spider Silk?
- Spider Silk, obtained of spider webs which are
known as strongest fiber in today's technological
enterprises. You must be familiar with this kind
of silk as in your childhood days we all try to
fiddle with spider webs and it uses to stick our
fingers like a Cotton Candy. With all that
memories in mind, Humans have invested their
imagination in the more creative way of utilizing
this silk. It is as strong as Spider-man web
swinging through buildings to buildings and is
more efficient and vigorous compared to Kevlar.
It has more elasticity and more waterproof than
silkworm silk, so you have an idea how many
effective application it has. However, Many
researchers are trying to develop this and making
it more prominent in today's market.
3How Spiders Design Their Webs?
- It swathes silk for the sheathing and sabotages
its prey. It uses the web to catch its prey using
its tenacious silk. As spider known for their
cannibalistic and territorial nature, they keep
safety measures as well using dragline silk which
is the strongest and supports the weight of the
spider and does not let it fall.
4Flying spiders uses silk to create a balloon to
save its adolescents and in case if they want to
jump or lift up in the air hiding under burrows
and nests to catch their prey. It also uses it
for mating purposes, Male spiders weave their
webs on which they deposit their sperms and
deposit it to on a female genitalia. Some species
utilize their web and surface it with sex
pheromones to attract a mate. With all these
characteristics of spiders using their webs in
their daily routine, we humans are getting an
idea how we can make it serve our purposes and
make it.
5How Spiders Produce Their Silk
- The spider uses arciform gland to swath silk and
Cylindriform gland for the formation of egg sac
silk. Ampullate glands both major and minor is
used to produce dragline silk. The flagelliform
gland is one of the most core fibers to create
most prominent sticky silk. All these glands are
located beneath the abdomen of the spider.
6Webs lose their stickiness after about a day due
to dust accumulation and exposure to oxygen. In
order to save energy, the spider digests their
own web before making a new one so the protein
used for the production of silk threads is
recycled.
7Spider Silk Application
- Research has shown that spider silk is extremely
strong and versatile thing. Producing the spider
silk is completed after blending the mechanical
properties and the non-polluting features. The
creation of spider silk is entirely eco-friendly,
as it is produced by spiders at high-performance
pressure, temperature and water, without any
pollution. Additionally, spider silk is fully
environmentally safe.
8Studies have shown that if the spider silk
production is increased, it will replace Kevlar.
And, it will be used to manufacture
wear-resistant lightweight clothing, bullet-proof
clothing, nets, seat belts, parachutes,
biodegradable bottles and medical items.
