Title: Are Sober Living Homes Successful at Helping With Recovery?
1ARE SOBER LIVING HOMES SUCCESSFUL AT HELPING WITH
RECOVERY?
Sober living homes are one of many options
people seeking recovery from various addictions
can take advantage of. Some of addictions
greatest recovery stories come from sober
living homes. The idea, though, is simple.
Most sober living homes usually have one main
tenant that must be followed, that if you are
going to live there you must be sober. Of
course, there may be other rules related
to housekeeping, chores, or behavior, but
sobriety is the most important of all. Sober
living homes are usually occupied by people who
have gone to rehab or through addiction
counseling programs before, but failed and
sought other options to help them recover.
Sober living homes differ from rehab centers
and halfway houses in that your main goal is
sobriety. While living in a sober house, you
will be encouraged to seek counseling and
pursue positive activities that will
help overcome addiction urges.
2Sober living homes are also different from
rehab centers because those living in the house
are given more freedom, such as the ability to
get a job, go to school, and run errands.
This is helpful in that it makes those in
recovery work towards a goal like getting a job
or promotion or getting a degree or
certification. And while in most in-patient
rehab facilities limit contact with the
outside world, sober living homes encourage
living life as normal as possible. In rehab,
there is usually a limit on how long you can
stay, such as 30 or 90 days. Another great
advantage is that they are much less costly that
many rehab in and outpatient programs. Sober
living homes also differ greatly from hallway
houses. Halfway houses have greater limitations
than sober living houses. They are usually
government funded, meaning that there are
usually strict and stringent use on the funds
available. Sober living homes are good choices
for people who have steady jobs that they do not
want to lose, because you are encouraged to
lead a successful career. Also those that
dont have a strong base of support in their
lives such as family and friends, because you
can depend on housemates and counselors at the
sober living home to support your journey on
the road to recovery. Many rehab programs are
short and offer minimal outpatient services,
so with a sober living home you are sure to
be able to stay for as long as you require.
Many of those who do choose to live in a sober
living home have tried halfway houses or rehab
centers before and maybe not succeeded at
sobriety after choosing those treatments. IF
this is the case, then a good sober living home
may be for you as it offers a much easier
transition and is much less disruptive to your
life outside of recovery.
