Working of hearing aids
  • Improved speech understanding in noisy
    environments
  • Increased gain without feedback
  • Enhanced listening comfort and speech perception
  • Ability to shape instrument settings to match the
    specific wearer's hearing needs
  • More precise directional capabilities

3
Component of Hearing aids
  1. Microphone
  2. Amplifier
  3. Speaker(Receiver)
  4. Power supply

4
Microphone
  • The first part of a hearing aid is called the
    microphone.
  • The microphone picks up sounds from the users
environment and converts them to electrical
signals before transporting them to the
    amplifier.
  • There are primarily two different types of
microphones for hearing aids directional and
    omnidirectional (also called non-directional).
  • Directional microphones typically pick up noises
that are directly in front of the wearer, while
    omni directional/non-directional microphones
detect sound from all directions around the user.

5
Amplifier
  • The second primary part of a hearing aid is the
    amplifier.
  • The amplifier takes the electrical signals that
were sent to it by the microphone and increases
and improves the sound and quality of the audio
    information.
  • Filters built into the amplifier constantly work
to remove extraneous, irrelevant, and distracting
sounds from the data, such as wind, background
    noise, and other audio feedback.

6
Speaker(Receiver)
  • The speaker, sometimes referred to as the
receiver, is the final component of the hearing
    aid.
  • It takes the modified electrical input from the
amplifier and converts it back into audio waves
that are understandable by the ear and the human
    brain.
  • The speakers audio output directly faces the
wearers inner ear, so that the sound effectively
reaches the proper structures in the ear that are
    responsible for hearing.

7
Power supply
  • The most common type is still the zinc-air button
    disposable battery.
  • Traditionally hearing aid batteries were produced
using trace amounts of mercury to assist with
    conductivity and stabilize internal components,
but mercury is no longer used in hearing aid
    batteries.
  • Battery(Power supply) of a hearing aids is
    rechargeable.
  • Zinc-air batteries remain stable for up to three
years when stored in a room temperature, dry
    environment.
