Its 2018 and rote learning is definitely out the
window. Surprisingly, a number of state boards in
India continue to pursue this practice. In this
current age of cross-disciplinary innovation,
memorised knowledge has no place. Studies have
proven that just because a child can recite
something by heart, doesnt mean they have gained
a mastery of the subject. In an age when many
schools are busy teaching kids to code, its time
to put your foot down and look beyond simple rote
learning.

  • The idea of the traditional classroom needs to
change. Students dont absorb much from the basic
writing on the blackboard approach, marking a
need for dynamic whiteboards and other classroom
    innovations.
  • Moreover, the attention span of your average
student today is far lower as a result of the
internet and advent of smartphones. They
understand the language of dynamic content and
its important for you to speak the same tongue as
    educators and parents.
  • Many schools are now taking things a step beyond
by introducing subjects like coding for children.

  • Who hasnt hated attending a lecture growing up?
Not only are they tedious ordeals but you also
have the added task of taking notes for fear of
    missing out on important points.
  • More and more schools and colleges are doing away
with traditional lectures and focusing more on
interactive videos which students can consume at
    leisure.
  • It gives the student the freedom to learn when
they want to and where they want to. While this
might seem like a radical change, one simply has
to look at the success stories to support this
    theory.

Another age-old teaching practice that needs to
leave the building is the concept of teaching
only through theory. Bookish knowledge never has
and never will serve to prepare children for the
real world and guess what, the real world has
gotten more dynamic than ever! Ideas like the
young entrepreneurs program have risen out of
this same need for practical learning in a school
setup.

  • Many schools are shifting their focus away from
old-school homework and are instead pushing
    children to take up projects.
  • The idea is to let kids motivate themselves to
make good use of their free time. They are pushed
towards projects that require group collaboration
as opposed to simple, individual homework
    assignments.
