• The Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY) is
  a national program of fellowship in Basic
  Sciences initiated and funded by the Department
  of Science and Technology, Government of India.
  Started in 1999, the program is executed by
  Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore.
• The aim of this program is to identify, encourage
  and assist talented and motivated students who
  are studying Basic Sciences to pursue career in
  research.
• Selection of a student for the KVPY Fellowship
  program is based on his / her performance in the
  Aptitude test and interview.
• KVPY is one of the most prestigious examinations
  in India.

Exam Pattern
The students who can apply for the Fellowship are
categorized in three streams Stream SA Students
enrolled in Class 11th (Science subjects
Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics)
during the academic year 2018-19 and having
secured a minimum of 75 (65 for SC / ST / PWD)
marks in aggregate in Mathematics and Science
subjects in the Class 10th Board examination. The
fellowship of the students selected under this
stream will be activated from 01 August 2020 only
if they join an undergraduate course (B.Sc. /
B.S. / B.Stat. / B.Math. / Int. M.Sc. / Int.
M.S.) in Basic Sciences in the academic year
2020-21 after having secured a minimum of 60
(50 for SC / ST / PWD) marks in aggregate in
Science subjects in the Class 12th Board
examination.

Stream SX Students enrolled in Class 12th
(Science subjects Physics, Chemistry, Biology
and Mathematics) during the academic year 2018-19
and having secured a minimum of 75 (65 for SC /
ST / PWD) marks in aggregate in Mathematics and
Science subjects in the Class 10th Board
examination. The fellowship of the students
selected under this stream will be activated from
01 August 2019 only if they join an undergraduate
course (B.Sc. / B.S. / B.Stat. / B.Math. / Int.
M.Sc. / Int. M.S.) in Basic Sciences in the
academic year 2019-20 after having secured a
minimum of 60 (50 for SC / ST / PWD) marks in
aggregate in Science subjects in the Class 12th
Board examination.

Stream SB Students enrolled in the 1st year of an
undergraduate program (B.Sc. / B.S. / B.Stat. /
B.Math. / Int. M.Sc. / Int. M.S.) in Basic
Sciences during the academic year 2018-19 and
having secured a minimum of 60 (50 for SC / ST
/ PWD) marks in aggregate in Science subjects
(Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics) in
the Class 12th Board examination. The fellowship
of the students selected under this stream will
be activated from 01 August 2019 only if in the
1st year final examination of B.Sc. / B.S. /
B.Math. / B.Stat. / Int. M.Sc. / Int. M.S. they
secure 60 (50 for SC / ST / PWD) marks.

For all the three streams (SA, SX and SB), the
students must enrol in an undergraduate course
(B.Sc. / B.S. / B.Stat. / B.Math. / Int. M.Sc. /
Int. M.S.) in the following Basic Science
subjects Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics,
Statistics, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Cell
Biology, Ecology, Molecular Biology, Botany,
Zoology, Physiology, Biotechnology,
Neurosciences, Bioinformatics, Marine Biology,
Geology, Human Biology, Genetics, Biomedical
Sciences, Applied Physics, Geophysics, Materials
Science and Environmental Science to be eligible
for KVPY fellowship.

in all the national dailies normally on the
Technology Day (May 11) and the second Sunday of

• Student registration and online application
  process for KVPY 2018 is now closed.
• The online computer-based aptitude test is
  conducted both in Hindi and English at centers in
  more than 90 cities across the country.
• Based on your performance in the aptitude test,
  you may be short-listed and asked to appear for
  an interview which is the final stage of the
  selection procedure.
• For preparing the merit list for the fellowship
  both aptitude test and interview marks are
  considered (75 of the marks in the aptitude test
  25 of the marks in the interview).

KVPY 2018 Aptitude test is an online computer
based test and will be conducted using an
easy-to-use portal on a computer. Duration 180
minutes Question Type Multiple choice
questions with 4 options for each question and
only one correct answer Exam language Hindi
and English The exam tests four subjects
Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics. The
paper is divided into two Parts PART A It is
divided into four sections / subjects Physics,
Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics Marking
scheme Each correct answer 1 mark each
incorrect answer -0.25 mark

All the questions in the four sections / subjects
of PART A and PART B are compulsory. In the
application form, if you choose Stream SA (Class
11th), you have to answer the questions on all
four subjects Physics, Chemistry, Biology and
Mathematics. The aptitude test will have a
mandatory Biology section, both in PART A and
PART B. Total number of questions 80 Total
Marks 100 Stream SX and SB For Class 12th
(Stream SX) and 1st year UG program students
(Stream SB), the aptitude test is identical. The
KVPY aptitude test for Stream SX / SB has the

There is no officially prescribed syllabus for
the aptitude test. The questions are based on
Class 10th, 11th and 12th CBSE syllabus. The
NCERT books must be followed for studying for
KVPY. Interview The interview dates, time and
venue for KVPY 2018 interview will be released
after the aptitude test results are declared.

The fellowship for the students selected under
the stream SA and SX will be started after Class
12th and for students selected under the stream
SB after 1st year of their UG course provided the
students in all the above three streams pursue an
undergraduate course (B.Sc. / B.S. / B.Stat. /
B.Math. / Int. M.Sc. / M.S.) in Basic Sciences
subjects.

The student is eligible to receive the KVPY
fellowship up to Pre-Ph.D. level or 5 years
whichever is earlier. The participation and
satisfactory performance in the Summer Project
every year is a prerequisite condition for
renewal of KVPY Fellowship. The KVPY fellows
enrolled in Class 12th and 1st year of the UG
program are invited to the National Science
(Vijyoshi) Camp and their travel expenses and
local hospitality will be met by KVPY. KVPY
Fellows can apply for direct admission to the
four-year Bachelor of Science (Research) Program
at Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore and to
the five-year BS-MS Degree Program at one of the
seven Indian Institute of Science Education and
Research (IISER).
