Hydraulic Oil Basic Information and Types

Hydraulic Oil
  • Hydraulic oil is also commonly referred to as
hydraulic fluid. It can be mineral based or
synthetic. The synthetic hydraulic fluid is
usually artificially made or man-made whereas the
mineral based hydraulic one comes from crude
oils. This oil or fluid is used to facilitate
power transfer in machinery and also acts as a
coolant, lubricant and also a sealant to the same
machinery. Hydraulic oils are usually made from
several contents such as mineral oil, silicone,
ethers, glycol and esters among other chemicals.
There are several uses of hydraulic oil besides
the primary one that we saw to be transferring
power within hydraulic systems. However let us
find out the various types of hydraulic oil first.

3
Types of Hydraulic Oil
  • Mineral oils these usually come as a result of
refined crude oil whose quality is then improved
using various substances. This oil is usually
labeled in three different labels depending with
the added substances. The HL labeled oil is that
with anti-corrosion additives. Then there is the
HH which is non inhibited and lastly the HM which
    has anti-wear additives.
  • Flame retardant oil the use of hydraulic
petroleum based oil usually poses a high risk of
fire ignition and for that reason this type of
oil is as a result of additives such as
water-glycol and phosphoric acid ester which
    give it anti-flammable properties.
  • Phosphate esters these fluids which are also
known as HFDR are resistant to fire. They should
however be taken proper care of to avoid
contamination which may tamper with their
properties. Filters should therefore be used to
    counter possible contamination.

Common Uses of Hydraulic Oil in Different
Machinery and Equipment
  • It is used for automotive lifts car lifts
usually require hydraulic fluid because they
highly depend on this kind of power for their
heavy performance as well as safety. For high
pressure, the oil is usually highly viscous.
  • Used in forklift trucks the forklifting trucks
usually rely on hydraulic oil when it comes to
lifting heavy goods. The power of such trucks to
move around heavy goods effortlessly is
    facilitated by hydraulic oils.
  • Used in log splitters the ease at which log
splitters are able to split the wood is
facilitated by the power of hydraulic oil.
  • In aviation it is used in aviation for
controlling systems such as the working of hangar
    doors and aircraft jacks.
  • For cruising ships in the marine industry the
comfort and calmness of cruise ships out at the
sea is facilitated by hydraulic oils. They
stabilize and control the systems reducing the
amount of roll for the whole ship.
  • Used in tractors the agricultural equipment and
machinery such as tractors heavily rely on
hydraulic oils for powering and general
    operations.

5
Uses of Various Additives of Hydraulic Oil
  • Anti-corrosive this facilitates the formation of
a coating or sealant that prevents rusting which
is facilitated by presence of moisture.
  • Anti-wear this additive helps in prolonging the
life of different machines and equipment.
  • Anti-oxidant reduces sludge formation therefore
making it possible to use oil for long without
    changing it.
