1UKs Home Secretary Ms. Priti Patel on EEA Family
Permit
- In the words of UKs Home Secretary Ms. Priti
Patel, On 31 October, we will leave the EU come
what may. Introducing tougher checks and ending
free movement as it currently stands will allow
us to take the first, historic steps towards
taking back control of our borders. - The words of this announcement shocked not only
the EEA and Switzerland nationals but also their
family members living outside the EEA who could
accompany those EEA and Swiss nationals
intending to live in the UK on a long term basis. - According to the latest announcement by the UK
Home Secretary, free movement for EEA and Swiss
nationals would not remain the same as it exists
in the present day after 31st October 2019 (the
day UK will exit the EU). - Citizens of the EEA and Switzerland along with
their family members of EEA Nationals, after the
31st of October 2019, would have an option of
securing a temporary immigration status for a
period of 3 years until 31st December 2020. - Further proposed changes include
- Removal of the blue EU customs channel after
31st October 2019, requiring all travellers to
make customs declarations through the red or
green channels. - Introduction of blue UK passports in the later
part of the year 2019 - EEA and Swiss nationals along with their close
family members, arriving in the UK after 31st
October 2019 would not be allowed the same
permanent residence rights that are presently in
effect. - These changes do not mean that free movement
would completely end after the 31st of October
2019, they however indicate that the same rights
would not be exercisable after the said date. EU
citizens would still be able to visit the UK for
visits and short trips but should they wish to
remain in the UK beyond 31st December 2020 they
would have to apply through Euro TLR (European
Temporary Leave to remain) which would grant them
temporary leave to remain in the UK, limited to
a fixed period of time.
