Worship The Boar-Faced Narasimha at Kroda
Narasimha Temple, Ahobilam
2
As one of the 108 Divya Desams, Ahobilam truly
stands a class apart. Tucked away neatly in the
Nallamala region of Andhra Pradesh, it consists
of a complex that houses spectacular temples,
along with a few other points of interest. Since
its on hilly terrain, the area is split into
Lower Ahobilam and Upper Ahobilam. Coming here on
a pilgrimage is usually a 1-2 day trip.

The Lions Roar
What sets Ahobilam apart from other holy sites?
Well, for starters, the region is devoted to Lord
Narasimha, the fearsome half lion, half man that
slew Hiranyakashipu. The entire complex is
chock-full of lore and heritage associated with
Narasimha, whichever corner you turn. Ahobilam
houses forms of Narasimha that are unique to it,
making for a truly one-of-a-kind experience.
There are 9 major temples spread out through the
Ahobilam complex, each housing a special
Narasimha form and having a unique
backstory.   One among those temples is the Kroda
Narasimha Temple.

Lore Of the Boar-Faced Lord
At this point, you might be wondering why the
Lord took upon this form to reside at Ahobilam.
For the answer, lets go back in time to the
moment when Narasimha slew Hiranyakashipu. As
enraged as he was, he directed his anger at
Brahma, the Creator, for granting Hiranyakashipu
his powers. He summoned Brahma, who very
fearfully approached the Lord.   In his anxiety,
Brahma dropped the Vedas he always carried, which
plummeted all the way down to Patala, the
netherworld. Narasimha at once took the form of
Kroda Narasimha, and went to Patala to retrieve
them. When he resurfaced, he was triumphant,
carrying the Vedas with him, and Bhumi Devi
herself on his tusk. Even today, Brahma can be
seen asking for the Lords forgiveness at the
Kshetra.   It is said that praying here with
full devotion to the Lord, is guaranteed to grant
every devotees desire. Some hardcore disciples
even sit here in penance for five whole days! The
Kroda Narasimha Temple is part and parcel of the
Ahobilam experience, and is not to be
missed.   Axis Tourism offers value-for-money
