  • History is commonly recognized as a central
component of a good education for home schooling.
In fact, according to the homeschooling
authorities Jessie Wise and Susan Wise Bauer,
"history is the subject," because it presents
"the unfolding of human achievement in every
field-science, literature, art , music, and
politics." Yet how many of us can say that we
were excited to learn history as a child, that we
emerged from our own youth with a history
education that actually empowered us to make our
own w? Do you want to learn more? Visit

  • There's no shame in admitting you've found
history dull, thought it was a waste of time, or
even hated it as a kid. Perhaps the way they
presented it warranted your contempt! Like the
young man from the TV show The Wonder Years,
Kevin Arnold, you still recall history as
mind-blowingly dull. I'm never going to overlook
the episode in which Kevin's history instructor,
played by Ben Stein, begins a lesson "Hundred
Years War ... Year Four!" I chuckled as a
historian and cried when I first watched that
show. It explains well that the very idea of
watching a seminar on history leads so many
people to raise their eyes to the back of their
    heads.

  • Honestly, whether you like background (or
love it like me), you realize you 're only one of
    a handful.
  • But if history is something that almost
everyone hated as a child, how can that be
something that we all think we need to teach our
children? Was that that we want to make them feel
the way we did? Clearly not. But the problem also
    remains "Why history?
  • The problem is recognized in Wise and Bauer's
The Well-Trained Mind but not really answered.
Documentary director Ken Burns is cited as
stating, "History is the analysis of everything
that has existed so far. If you are willing to
exist completely in the current moment, the
research of history is unavoidable." Sadly, this
statement just begs the question why shouldn't
you stay in the current? Have a look at istorie
to get more info on this.

  • Indeed, in comparing present-day American
culture with others in history, I can honestly
say that with the possible exception of the Dark
Ages, there has never been a time in history in
which a greater percentage of the population has
been so absorbed by their own personal sphere of
concern and so ignorant of the vast array of
accomplishments and failures that is the past of
    humanity.
  • What is it?
  • The world demands that we live a busy life.
In particular, modern life entails the most
complicated set of challenges people have ever
faced. We have to respond to the fast-paced
developments in the business environment on a
regular basis. We need to juggle our careers with
the needs of our friends and families. We need to
look after our homes, service our cars and
upgrade our computers. We ought to keep healthy,
look at our consumption of sugar and caffeine and
control our cholesterol and our trans fats. If

  • The subject is life and not history. How
could anyone argue that the past-a world long
gone-deserves attention at the expense of the
    ever-increasingly demanding present? This
question needs a clear response-particularly if
you are going to dedicate a large portion of your
time to making sure your child knows history as a
homeschooling parent. You better think your child
will want to know why history is worth the
effort, even if he or she doesn't ask the
    question out loud.
  • The first aspect of the answer is that aside
from the past, there is no such thing as the
    present.
  • The past is not a long-gone country. It
pierces the atmosphere around us. Indeed, it's
the reason a world around us even exists. The
present would not have come to exist without the
    past!
  • To understand this idea, sit down in your
home school and select and start dissecting an
object - any item - from among your teaching
materials. But, historically, do so. My favorite
example is a clock by analogue. It has a clear
plastic cover and a plastic casing, but I will
leave that aside, together with the dial and the
amazing system of Arabic numerals that are
inscribed on it. Thanks to the current generated
by a tiny battery, I will concentrate on the
    electric motor that drives it.
