What is New Distribution Capability? Why Do We
Need NDC?
  • New Distribution Capability is a new XML-based
    data transmission standard. NDC creates
opportunities to standardize data transfer. Its
a standard developed by the International Air
    Transport Association (IATA) to enhance
communication between airlines and travel agents.
  • The NDC Standard enables the travel industry to
alter the way air products are retailed to
companies, leisure, and business travelers by
    eliminating the industry's current distribution
    limitations
  • Product differentiation and time-to-market
  • Access to complete and rich air content
  • Transparent shopping experience

3
  • An industry standard will enable a more efficient
    airline distribution system, benefiting airlines,
agencies, GDSs, IT providers, and travel
start-ups. With NDC, an airline may quickly offer
this traveler a package that includes a direct
flight, an extra checked bag, and a seat in
business class based on their customer data.
Furthermore, NDC enables airlines to deliver this
content directly to travel agents and travel
management companies (TMC) without requiring GDS.
  • The airline sector has been working on NDC since
2012. Travelport recognized the need for airlines
to provide its large inventory of airfares and
ancillaries in an interactive, customized, and
engaging manner for indirect sales on their
    websites.
  • New Distribution Capability supports travel
agents and agencies in minimizing operating
    costs, time-consuming procedures, documentation
techniques, and improving the advantages of
    different price alternatives. Furthermore, the
desire of airlines to have more control over
their content and improve their sales abilities
led to the travel sector's need for NDC.
  • NDC gives travel companies additional information
regarding airline services and ancillaries, and
rich content paves the way for technological
advancement. NDC provides access to the Internet
Booking Engine (IBE) and the Global Distribution
System, lowering costs and increasing revenues.

4
What benefits does New Distribution Capability
provide?
  • Personalized shopping experience and access to
customer information. The majority of client
personal data is currently kept by
intermediaries, OTAs, and GDSs. It implies that
airlines only receive minimal information on
their customers, which prevents them from
personalizing the purchase experience, which has
become a standard in modern travel eCommerce. The
goal of the NDC standard is to give airlines
    direct information about their customers.
  • Content and pricing autonomy. Most airlines
publish their tariffs through ATPCO, the
technology supplier and primary source of price
data. Having a third-party act as an intermediary
    between revenue management and distribution
channels implies that airlines miss out on
dynamic pricing. Dynamic pricing refers to the
capacity to produce personalized ticket and
travel package offers based on specific client
information. The new XML standard enables
airlines to create their own APIs and alter
pricing independently, adding value to their
offerings and adjusting rates uniquely for each
    consumer.
  • Rich content offers, ancillaries, and discounts.
Airlines are unable to incorporate ancillaries in
their offerings since flight data is distributed
via GDS's EDIFACT (Electronic Data Interchange
for Administration, Commerce, and Transport). As
ancillaries are the primary source of profit for
carriers, this leads to financial losses for
    service providers.
  • Product differentiation. The traditional GDS
system allows airlines to show fares and
timetables. While tariff metasearch engines and
OTAs make it easy for travelers to evaluate
prices, airlines cant market their added value
services and fully compete. This difficulty is
solved by having rich content that covers all
    service data.
  • Reduced reliance on legacy systems. Most airlines
use traditional passenger service systems (PSS)
    that contain reservation information, pricing,
and flight schedules. The primary function of the
PSS is to indicate which seats are available for
a given flight. PSSs may have poor performance
and many other restrictions, and most PSS
    providers lag in modernization.

5
Why do airlines develop New Distribution Channels
(NDC)?
  • It gives businesses more control over their
    products, improves their distinctiveness,
enhances the number of services they may supply,
and personalizes the offer, thus increasing their
    income.
  • Gain more control over their distribution
strategy to deliver unique offerings and reduce
    the dependence on third-party distributors.
  • Create additional revenue with expanded offers
that incorporate special features and services to
differentiate and promote beyond a simple,
    text-based price sort.
  • Save costs by shifting and recovering
distribution costs through GDS fees and
    commercial conversations with distribution
    companies.
  • Increase traveler engagement by enabling insight
    into shopper preferences and delivering
    customized deals.

6
How do travel companies benefit from New
Distribution capabilities?
  • It increases income for airlines while lowering
    distribution costs. Small to medium-sized
airlines, air charters, air ambulances, and
airline aggregators benefit from our top airline
tools. Our Airline Booking Engine module displays
airline inventory, availability, and pricing in
    real-time. B2C / B2B users can book an airline
    seat and create a PNR.
  • With NDC, airlines can change and adjust their
    prices, giving their customers more
personalization. NDC is open to IT providers,
intermediaries, third parties, and even non-IATA
members. It is a standard that allows travel
industry providers to add value-added services
and new revenue streams by collaborating and
    working with their partners.
  • New Distribution Capability (NDC) allows the
distribution of airfares and ancillaries through
third parties which are being developed by the
airline association IATA. It is a new way for
them to connect with airlines and could open up
innovative solutions to deliver air content to
    clients.
  • NDC is the future of Airline Distribution The
travel consumer has changed and is becoming their
own travel agents as they have as much or
    sometimes more information than traditional
travel agencies. The changing nature of the
travel consumer is spurring Metasearch and the
larger Online Travel Agencies to evolve into
online marketplaces where all the travel needs of
    a consumer are fulfilled.

7

In Conclusion
  • In the new era of multi-source content
distribution, NDC may supply dynamic pricing and
product information to create the final offer to
    all partners.
  • It also allows for a better price comparison
experience, allowing agencies to book, pay, and
issue tickets. These are critical features for
providing the individualized offers that the new
distribution era demands. NDC is an excellent
solution for tailoring an end-to-end travel
experience to the preferences of its customers.
  • TMCs and companies can use it to receive
comprehensive fares from direct link airlines via
GDSs, LCCs, and aggregators in the search. NDC
aims to reduce the industry's distribution
constraints and enable access to rich and
complete air content with a transparent
purchasing experience by allowing airlines to
offer their tickets directly to consumers.
  • The New Distribution Capability solution is part
of a comprehensive platform that puts airlines in
control of their retailing strategy. The IATA NDC
    complements merchandising technology with rich
    content and branding.
  • It collaborates closely with IATA and airline
    corporations to deliver industry-leading content
via travel commerce platforms. The International
    Air Transportation Association (IATA) designed
the NDC standard to allow airline service
providers to offer rich information and
    ancillaries to their consumers.
