The month of Christmas is here and for every
kitchen gardening enthusiast, we have the top 4
veggies you would want to have this Christmas.
For Fruits, Flowers or Vegetables, we are ready
to make our gardens green again. From
cauliflower to leafy greens here are the
must-have veggies to grow this winter. 1.
Cauliflower The cauliflower is a vegetable that
belongs to the cabbage family. They are flower
buds of the plant. It is highly appreciated for
its taste. It can be served both raw and
cooked. Cauliflower retains its white colour due
to protective leaves that grow around the head.
The leaves protect the head from the sun,
preventing chlorophyll formation and preventing
the head from turning green.
2
Growth and Care Cauliflower being a winter
vegetable is usually planted from September to
October. The plant is grown using the
transplantation method. Seed trays or paper cups
can be used to start seeds. Sow the seeds in
loose seed starting potting mix about 1/4 inch
deep. Water it thoroughly and nurture it in a
warm environment. Check the moisture level daily
and sprinkle water if the soil begins to dry out.
The first seedlings should sprout in around 3-4
days. The seedlings can be transferred when they
are about 4-6 weeks old. The soil may be loamy
or clayey. A good amount of water will yield the
pre-flowered cauliflower in 2 months. Benefits
It is a vegetable that provides all-around
nutrients and vitamins. It is rich in fibre and
antioxidants and reduces body weight. 2.
Peas Peas are the fruit and seed of a vine plant
that is grown and consumed worldwide. They can
be eaten raw, frozen, in soup or salad, or cooked
into a variety of meals. Peas provide a
delicious sweetness in the form of a crisp tiny
ball. The degree of this delicacy will vary
depending on the kind, with fresh sweet peas
being the most candy-like.
3
Growth and Care Peas are generally grown in cold
temperatures. It is a climber plant so choose
where it can climb. These plants require full
sun and well-draining soil. They require less
fertilizer than many other vegetables, therefore
a little compost added to the soil before
planting is usually sufficient. Only water when
there isnt enough rain. Keep a watch out for
cutworm and aphid damage. It is important to
harvest peas at the proper time. Pick peas as
soon as the pods reach their full size. It should
be soft, delicious, and thin-skinned. Benefits L
ess maintenance, easy to grow. A good source of
protein. 3. Radish Radishes are a type of
taproot vegetable with light-coloured, crisp
flesh and varying skin colour. Raw radishes have
a tangy, slightly peppery flavour. Cooking a
radish softens the strong bite and brings out an
earthy, natural sweetness. The winter radish is
eaten raw in salads. The winter radish is fast
growing.
4
Growth and Care Radish is a cold-season
vegetable that thrives in cool, wet
environments. Radishes thrive best in
well-draining sandy loams rich in organic matter
and with a pH of 5.8 to 6.8. Radish should be
cultivated in full to partial sun. Radishes will
benefit from small doses of nitrogen fertilizer
applied at regular intervals throughout the
growing season. Seedlings should be maintained
evenly moist but not damp as they grow. Radishes
normally attain full maturity 30 to 50 days after
planting. They should be uprooted as soon as
possible because over-mature radishes become
woody and bitter. Benefits Radishes contain a
lot of fibre, which eases digestion. A
vegetable-rich in minerals, vitamins, and
antioxidants. 4. Spinach Spinach is a superfood.
It is loaded with tons of nutrients in a
low-calorie package. It is distinguished by its
great nutritional value since its vitamin and
mineral content is higher than that of other
vegetables.
5
Growth and Care Spinach requires well-drained
soil that is rich in organic matter, such as
compost or composted manure, as well as a pH of
6.5 to 7. The temperature ranges from 10C to
22C. Direct sunshine to partial shade is
required. Avoid over-watering spinach grows best
in cold temperatures. Bolting is another
prevalent concern with spinach plants, in
addition to pests and diseases. Your spinach
plants are bolting if they are going to
seed. This could be caused by a lack of water,
too much sun, or too much heat during the later
phases of growth. Finally, uproot the green
leafy plant when they are matured. Benefits Pro
vides loads of iron, calcium, and other vital
minerals. Good source of roughage for
digestion. Important for skin, hair, and bone
health Prevents cancer, is insulin sensitive,
prevents asthma, and lowers blood pressure. 5.
Dahlia Dahlia, native to Mexico and Central
America, is an easy to grow flowering plant that
grows ranging from 12 inches to even 8 feet. It
was declared as the National flower of Mexico in
1963. Most of the species of this flower do not
produce scented flowers. The
6
care to be taken off the plant majorly depends on
the area in which it is being grown. You can buy
Dahlia seeds online at an affordable price.
Growth and Care Dahlias thrive well in fertile,
slightly acidic soil which is full of organic
matter. Place it in a well sunlit area that gets
around 6-8 hours of sunlight. Dahlias are the
easy to grow flowering plants that are blooming
flowers therefore they thrive well in sunlit
areas. Offer the plant some protection from
strong winds. Water the Dahlias once or twice a
week. Do not leave them unwatered as they
require a constant supply of water to grow well.
