What is Blue Light?
Blue light belongs to visible light spectrum,
precisely what human eye is able to view. It
tends to vibrate within 380-500 nanometer range,
possess the highest energy and shortest
wavelength. Approximately one-third of visible
light can be stated to be blue light of which
sunlight is considered to be a major source. Few
artificial sources include tablet screens,
smartphones, computer monitors, LED TVs,
fluorescent light, etc.

Smartphones Tablet screens Gaming systems

How Harmful is Blue Light?
Screens tend to emit blue light but it is found
to be quite small when compared to what is
emitted by the sun. But exposure to this light
emitted from the screens of digital devices for
prolonged time is known to have long-term
effects on health. As per Vision Council,
approximately 80 percent of adults can be found
to use digital devices for over 2 hours a day.
Around 67 of them use more than two devices
simultaneously while 59 show digital eye strain
symptoms.

Vision Problems Due to Blue Light
  • Human eyes are not designed to block out blue
    light. Hence, the lens and cornea are exposed to
    this light that penetrates and reaches the
    retina. Constant exposure may cause retinal
    cells to get damaged, thereby causing vision
    problems such as
  • Age-related Macular Degeneration
  • Dry Eyes
  • Irritation in eyes
  • Tired eyes
  • Squinting
  • Moreover, when using such devices, people often
    blink less, thus causing eye strain and dry
    eyes. A common sight noticed is shoulder and neck
    pain, blurred vision and headaches. Fortunately,

    and recovery of proper eyesight.

How to Reduce Negative Impacts of Blue Light?
  1. Follow 20-20-20 Rule- You need to take a break
    for 20 seconds after every 20 minutes to view
    something that is 20 feet away.
  2. Install blue light filters in your computer
    screen, tablet or smartphone- These filters are
    designed to help your eyes to avoid exposure to
    blue light emitted by different devices. Also,
    it does not affect display visibility.
  3. Establish good posture and working distance while
    viewing the screen- Try to control glare and
    lighting on your gadget screen. Even minor vision
    related issues should be corrected immediately
    and properly.
