2Subtalar Arthritis
Subtalar arthritis affects the subtalar joint
(the joint found below the ankle joint) in the
hindfoot. The symptoms of subtalar arthritis
include pain and swelling in the hindfoot area,
which can be developed by walking, especially on
a rough surface, and standing. You can feel pain
in a specific location at the level of the hind
foot which is just below the outside of the
ankle. The most common cause of subtalar
arthritis is traumatic injury due to an injury
commonly seen after calcaneal fracture, or
abnormal heel bone alignment. Dr. Shakti Swaroop
is experienced in determining the nature and
extent of subtalar Arthritis by conducting a
physical examination or by imaging tests such as
X-Ray, sometimes CT or MRI scans. The most common
surgical treatment of subtalar arthritis is
Subtalar fusion.
3Symptoms
- Difficulty walking, particularly on slopes or
uneven ground - Swelling.
- Reduced movement in the joint (stiffness)
- Change in foot shape (joint deformity)
- Pain. Painful stiffness in the morning. Eases off
with activity but later becomes constant.
4Causes of Subtalar Arthritis
Osteoarthritis Also known as age-related or
wear-and-tear arthritis. Sprains These injuries
involve stretching or tearing of
ligaments. Strains These injuries involve
stretching or tearing of muscles or tendons. The
most common cause of subtalar arthritis is trauma
due to an injury such as a calcaneal fracture, or
abnormal heel bone alignment.
5Subtalar Arthritis Treatments
The treatment for subtalar arthritis usually
includes rest, ice packs, and pain medication. In
some cases, surgery may be needed to remove any
damaged tissues or cartilage from the
joint. Rest Avoiding walking or putting weight
on the sore foot. Ice Applying a cool pack to
the affected area to reduce inflammation. Compres
sion Bandaging the foot with an elastic bandage
to reduce swelling. Elevation Keeping the foot
elevated on pillows to reduce swelling.. Physical
therapy or physiotherapy works effectively in
reducing the pain caused by subtalar arthritis.
Moreover, it makes the muscles around the ankle
stronger and helps in bringing back the lost
range of movements, and also provides stability
to the foot.
