1. Chianti (cheen-TEE) is an Italian red wine
Chianti is an Italian red wine that's been made
since the 1400s and is still popular
today. Chianti comes from the region of Tuscany,
which is located in central Italy. The word
"chianti" means "little old thing" or "poor
thing," but this doesn't mean that you should
think less of yourself for drinking it! Chianti
wines come from Sangiovese grapes--a variety
used in many other well-known Italian wines like
Brunello di Montalcino and Brunello di
Montepulciano (both wines are also produced in
Tuscany).

2. The DOCG classification for Chianti was
introduced in 1968
The DOCG classification for Chianti was
introduced in 1968, which means the wine has to
come from a specific area in Tuscany and follow
strict production rules. This is a very special
designation because it indicates that the wine
is of high quality and comes from a small area.
The word DOCG stands for "Denominazione di
Origine Controllata e Garantita," which
translates into English as "controlled and
guaranteed designation of origin." DOCGs are
considered some of the best wines in Italy by
many experts, so if you see one on your grocer's
shelf, pick it up!

3. Historically, Chianti was mainly produced by
small growers who sold their grapes to larger
producers for
processing
Chianti is a red wine that is produced in
Tuscany, Italy. The grape variety used to make
Chianti is called Sangiovese and can be traced
back to the 14th century. Originally, small
growers would sell their grapes to larger
producers for processing into wine however,
over time these small growers began producing
their own wines using locally grown grapes
instead of relying on others for production.

4.There are two types of Chianti Classico
There are two types of Chianti Classico - Chianti
Classico Riserva and Chianti Classico Gran
Selezione. Chianti Classico Riserva is aged for
a minimum of two years in large oak casks and
the wines are typically more structured than the
younger counterpart, which can be enjoyed
earlier. Chianti Classico Gran Selezione is aged
for a minimum of one year in large oak casks,
but unlike its counterpart above it must also be
100 Sangiovese (the only other permitted grape
is Canaiolo).

5. There are some specific factors that have to
be met in order for a wine to be called
"Chianti."
First, the grapes used must be Sangiovese.
Second, the wine must be produced in the Chianti
region of Tuscany. Third, it should be made
using traditional methods and aged for a minimum
of two years before being sold (though most
producers wait until after four years). These
requirements ensure that you're getting
something authentic when you buy your bottle,
they also help explain why many bottles cost so
much making great wine takes time and skill!
