Sunscreen (SPF)
Sunscreen (SPF) is used in cosmetics to protect
the skin from the sun's harmful ultraviolet (UV)
rays. UV rays can cause premature aging,
wrinkles, and skin cancer. Sunscreen works by
absorbing or reflecting UV rays, preventing them
from reaching the skin. There are two main
types of sunscreen mineral and chemical. Mineral
sunscreens, also known as physical sunscreens,
sit on the surface of the skin and reflect UV
rays. Chemical sunscreens absorb UV rays and
convert them into heat, which is then released
from the skin. Sunscreen is typically added to
cosmetics in the form of a lotion, cream, or gel.
It can also be found in powders, makeup, and lip
balms. The amount of sunscreen in a cosmetic
product is typically indicated by its SPF rating.
An SPF of 15 blocks about 93 of UVB rays, while
an SPF of 30 blocks about 97 of UVB rays.
