About This Presentation
Title:

Barga 3 Gioiello d'arte medievale

Description:

Set in the beautiful mountainous northwest corner of Tuscany, the medieval city of Barga is situated on a spur overlooking the mid-Serchio River Valley. Barga, in its heyday, was a stronghold of The Medici's Florence. Against the often fiercely independent republic of Lucca, and the Dukes of Este, or ubiquitous Visconti, it was known as Barga Fiorentina. This is still evident in its culture, language, art and architecture, and the proud Barghigiani continue to think of them as a cut above. Barga is nevertheless on the edge of the wilds of the Garfagnana, "land of wolves and outlaws" otherwise known for vast chestnut forests, wild boar, delicious pecorino cheeses and porcini mushrooms. – PowerPoint PPT presentation

The Duomo of Barga is the most important
religious building in the town. The cathedral is
built in a Romanesque style of architecture which
is quite typical to this valley. Built between
the 11th and 15th century, the cathedral has a
limestone façade. The interior of the cathedral
is quite impressive there is a single nave with
two aisles. In the central nave is the jewel of
Barga, a superb pulpit, attributed to Guido
Bigarelli or one of his students (XIII century).
Marble columns hold up the rectangular case, but
the decorations are what impress the faces of
the pulpit depict scenes from the life of Jesus,
the prophets and evangelical symbols. The
symbolism of these images must have impressed the
faithful of Barga for centuries.

The facade is adorned by a double row of small
arches carved with human figures, animals, and
