Title: Italia Amalfi 2 Passeggiata
1Amalfi
2
Passeggiata
2Amalfi lies at the mouth of a deep ravine, at the
foot of Monte Cerreto (1,315 metres), surrounded
by dramatic cliffs and coastal scenery. The town
of Amalfi was the capital of the maritime
republic known as the Duchy of Amalfi, an
important trading power in the Mediterranean
between 839 and around 1200
The Amalfi Coast boasts one of the most stunning
views in Italy
Along the Mediterranean Sea from Sorrento to
Positano, the Amalfi coast is one of the most
popular, yet hard-to-reach seaside destinations
in Italy
3In 1343 a large part of the lower town was
destroyed by a tsunami
4The famous eight-pointed Maltese cross is of
mediaeval origin. It was first adopted by the
ancient maritime republic of Amalfi, which lies
on the Costiera Amalfitana, or Amalfi Coast,
between Salerno and Naples in southwest Italy.
Its emblem features an eight-pointed white cross
on a black field. The shape of the Amalfi cross
is singular, being a Greek cross pattée with
V-shaped arrows inserted into the ends of its
arms. And although it is possibly linked to the
Normans who brought it to Amalfi, or to the eight
Beatitudes, or (as was even later said)
represents the eight Langues of the Knights
Hospitallers of St John of Jerusalem (Italy,
Provence, Auvergne, France, Germany-Bavaria-Austri
a, England-Scotland-Wales-Ireland,
Aragon-Catalonia-Navarre and Castille-Leon-Portuga
l), it may arguably suggest a close connection
with the shape of a ships compass

9There are very few historical buildings of note.
The explanation is chilling most of the old
city, and its populace, simply slid into the sea
during an earthquake in 1343.

24A patron saint of Amalfi is Saint Andrew, the
Apostle, whose relics are kept here at Amalfi
Cathedral. In 1206, Saint Andrew's relics were
brought to Amalfi from Constantinople by the
Pietro Capuano following the Sack of
Constantinople (an event of the 4th Crusade)
after the completion of the town's cathedral.

36At the top of a staircase, Saint Andrew's
Cathedral (Duomo) overlooks the Piazza Duomo, the
heart of Amalfi. The cathedral dates back to the
11th century the façade of the cathedral is
Byzantine in style and is adorned with various
paintings and mosaics of saints, including a
large one of Saint Andrew

Hall

39The front facade was rebuilt in 1891 after the
original one collapsed. It is of striped marble
and stone with open arches that have lace
detailing not commonly found in Italian sacred
architecture while the tiled cupola is quite
common amongst churches of the area
40Sixty-two steps, wide and steep, lead up to the
doors. Begun in 1180, and completed over 100
years later, the Romanesque style bell tower is
off-center. The structure includes four small
towers of Arab architectural type that are
adorned with arches and are covered
with majolica tiles. During times of war, the
bell tower was purposed for defense

46The Amalfi coast is famed for its production of
Limoncello liqueur and the area is a known
cultivator of lemons. The correct name is
"sfusato amalfitano", and they are typically long
and at least double the size of other lemons,
with a thick and wrinkled skin and a sweet and
juicy flesh without many pips. It is common to
see lemons growing in the terraced gardens along
the entire Amalfi coast between February and
October
